An appealing title packed with visual backup. April Pulley Sayre's The Bumblebee Queen (1570913625, $14.95) takes a look at the lifestyle of the lowly bumble bee, combining facts with a format which reads with the drama and action of a novel. Patricia J. Wynne provides exceptionally realistic, colorful drawings to compliment Sayre's inviting story line. Anna Harwell Celenza's Bach's Goldberg Variations (1570915105, $19.95) is set in 1937 and tells of a young orphan taken under the wing of musician Bach when his master discovers his talent. Employed as a servant, Goldberg practices playing at night secretly, until Count Keyserlingk discovers his talents. An audio cd included in the package makes this especially recommended for parents teaching music to their kids.

Extractions: Entries Publication Data Advisory Board Contributors ... World Civilizations The Reader's Companion to American History When Chicago mayor and political boss Richard J. Daley died in office in 1976, obituaries not only lamented his passing but commented on the demise of urban political machines. Thirteen years later when his son, Richard M. Daley, was elected mayor, critics warned of a "pin-striped machine," in which the Loop's politically connected lawyers would replace old-style precinct captains. But the father had once told the son, "I can put you on the ballroom floor, but you'll have to dance for yourself." To the critics' surprise, in the early days of the younger Daley's first administration, the music was that of reform. The Daley family saga illustrates the complexity of urban politics. Call a politician a boss rather than a leader, label party structure a machine rather than an organizationeither sends the voter a clear message. That is why the prototype of the political boss, William M. Tweed, proclaimed himself to be a "Statesman!" Whether Robin Hood or scoundrel, corrupter or modernizer of cities, omnipotent dictator or mere cog in the many-spoked wheel of municipal government, the boss is an urban institution that must be understood if one is to know the history of America's cities. A century ago, when he wanted to reinforce his belief that local government in the United States was a conspicuous failure, James Bryce described the boss as "dominant among his fellows.... He dispenses places, rewards the loyal, punishes the mutinous, concocts schemes, negotiates treaties. He generally avoids publicity, preferring the substance to the pomp of power, and is all the more dangerous because he sits, like a spider, hidden in the midst of his web. He is a Boss." (Read the history found on the telegraph and telephone pages to better understand the roots of radio) Few radio broadcasts travel through the air exclusively, while many are sent over telephone wires. In the 1860s, James Clerk Maxwell , a Scottish physicist, predicted the existence of radio waves, and in 1886 Heinrich Rudolph Hertz , a German physicist, demonstrated that rapid variations of electric current could be projected into space in the form of radio waves similar to those of light and heat. Guglielmo Marconi , an Italian inventor, proved the feasibility of radio communication. He sent and received his first radio signal in Italy in 1895. By 1899 he flashed the first wireless signal across the English Channel and two years later received the letter "S", telegraphed from England to Newfoundland. This was the first successful transatlantic radiotelegraph message in 1902.
