Born in Scotland, MacDonald rose to be a prominent colonial politician and helped craft the nation of Canada out of a bunch of loosely organized British colonies. He was also an unstable alcoholic, and would often show up to Parliament drunk. MacDonald's dream was to unite Canada with a massive railroad, but he was forced to resign after it was revealed he had made a shady business deal to pay for it. He was elected back to power in 1878, but then tragically died in office. Most Canadians know John A. MacDonald as the guy who appears on the ten-dollar bill.
