Extractions: The Center's Mission The Center for Criminology and Criminal Justice Research (CCCJR) was launched in the fall of 1996 with a primary mission of conducting basic research on crime and criminal justice, collaborating with the public sector agencies in addressing critical issues in criminal justice practice, administration, and policy, and promoting discussion and dialogue about crime and criminal justice. The Center is currently engaged in two funded research projects. One, which is sponsored by the National Institute of Justice, is a collaborative project with the Texas Youth Commission (TYC) evaluating the Commission's chemical dependency treatment. The second, funded by the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, is a state-wide evaluation of the assessment and referral of youthful offenders at initial contact with juvenile authorities. This project is being conducted in collaboration with the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission. Professor George W. Holden, a Center Research Associate and Associate Professor of Psychology, was recently awarded a research grant from the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health to study the impact of domestic violence. The two year grant is entitled "Wife Batterers as Fathers: The Influence of Child and Parent Characteristics on the Quality of Parenting."

Some of these programs are called "children's ombudsman" offices, others "child advocate" offices, or they may have other names. Most are independent from the children's services delivery agencies, but some are housed within them. The above link is for a directory of over 25 such programs, developed and maintained by Laureen D'Ambra, head of Rhode Island's Office of the Child Advocate (a model for several similar programs in other states). Child Advocacy Seminar This seminar explores the legal and psychosocial principles governing the creation, regulation and termination of the parent-child relationship. The historical, constitutional and common law antecedents of our contemporary notions of parental autonomy, parents patriae, and children's rights are examined in the context of disputes about access to education and medical treatment, child abuse and neglect, foster care, and adoption. Domestic Violence Clinic Students in the Domestic Violence Law Clinic work in one of several government agencies or nonprofit offices in the Bay Area, or with the instructor on state legislation. They may also assist with post-conviction issues faced by battered women in state prisons, and employment issues affecting domestic violence victims. Students interview clients; draft restraining orders, memoranda, op-ed pieces and motions; represent clients at hearings; research policy issues; and attend meetings with government officials, judges and legislators.
