    Extractions: My name is Gary Bezant. I am the lead designer for The Falklands War: 1982 . This title takes the ATF engine to the next level, and brings to the ATF series an historical perspective and a title that is mainly based around the infantry battalion and amphibious operations. The Falklands War: 1982 was an idea I went to Pat Proctor (president of ProSIM Company) with, in December of 2003. The campaign in the South Atlantic had been one that had by and large been over looked by the wargames industry, and had always interested me.. The Falklands War: 1982 features eight scenarios covering the major land actions fought during the campaign. Each scenario features a brief history of how the battle was conducted and the historic out come. I think I can say without fear of contradiction that the historical scenarios in TFW are the most accurate treatment yet of the Falklands War, in simulation, print, or any other medium. Also included in The Falklands War: 1982 are ten "What-If" scenarios. Six of the what-if scenarios look at what might have happened if certain orders or actions had been carried out during the campaign. The other four scenarios are a hypothetical look at what might have happened if the terrain on the Falkland Islands had been suitable enough to allow armour to be deployed.

    Extractions: within the Continetal United States Three hundred miles off the Argentina coast in the south Atlantic lay the Falkland Islands, consisting of two main isles (East and West Falkland) and about two hundred smaller islands. The only town is also the capital of the region, Port Stanley, and it is from there that the British territories of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands are administered. With a total population of only a couple thousand stalwart individuals (and many more sheep and livestock) the Falklands seems an odd place to fight a war over, but that's exactly what happened in 1982. Ownership of the islands has always been a hotly contested issue between the governments of Argentina and Great Britain. Argentina had claimed the islands since 1820, but the British actually occupied the islands from 1833 onwards. On March 26th, 1982 the Argentinean dictatorship of General Galtieri decided to invade the islands in an operation titled Operación Rosario, not for any true military objective, but simply to save his skin, and the other heavy handed rulers of Argentina. Civil unrest had been steadily growing, inflation was taking its toll on the economy (which was already in shambles), and if the people did not have an external enemy they would soon turn on the junta. Why not take what they had claimed was theirs for all those decades? On April 2nd the war began, with thousands of Argentine troops landing on the Falklands.

John Nott, British secretary of defense Announces British liberation of South Georgia "The white flag was hoisted in Grytviken beside the Argentine flag." (April 25, 1982) On March 19, 1982, Argentine dictator Leopoldo Galtieri abandoned his diplomatic claims to British-held islands to the east of Argentina, and landed a group of civilians on South Georgia, a scarcely inhabited dependency of the Falkland Islands crown colony. On April 2, this preliminary operation was followed by a full-scale military invasion of South Georgia and the main Falkland Islands, some 1,380 miles to the west in the Atlantic Ocean. When diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict failed, Britain sent a task force of thirty warships with supporting aircraft to the islands, which had been occupied by the British for nearly 150 years. In late April, South Georgia was liberated, and within six weeks the Argentine forces were completely routed. Designated Operation CORPORATE by the British, the five month war included the world's most significant amphibious operations since the Inchon landings in 1950, a logistics pipeline of over 7000 miles, and a winter combat arena 3300 miles from the nearest friendly base at Ascension Island. Argentina's claim on the Falklands (which it calls the Malvinas Islands) was based on sheer proximity to Argentina's mainland and its purported “inheritance” of sovereignty from the failed 1810 Spanish government. This claim had great emotional significance for the Argentinean public, and had been part of public school history curricula for generations. The actual motivation for Argentina's April 1982 invasion was a more immediate threat to General Leopoldo Galtieri’s ruling military junta: internal instability in Argentina threatened to topple his dictatorship. Galtieri needed a uniting diversion, an outside conflict to distract the public and maintain domestic control.
