The building now known as The Burgh Lodge appears to have originally been two separate properties, according to early records in the legal documents of the 18th and 19th centuries. By a disposition of 17th March 1749 Robert Young, a weaver of Newbigging, sold certain subjects in Falkland to John Lawson, a merchant of Falkland. In 1802 John Lawson sold the property to William Gulland, a surgeon of Falkland, and by 1847 after passing through various members of the Gulland Family the owner was Dr. William Gulland a physician and surgeon in the Royal Navy. Concurrently with the above transactions by a disposition of 5th March 1746 Robert Brydie, a Baillie of Falkland, coveyed cerain property to his son George. By 1863 after several changes of ownership this porperty beonged to Walter Lamond, a plasterer of Falkland. Another member of the Gulland family, William, a lawyer, acquired this property from Walter Lamond in 1880, confirmed by Sasine registration on 30th April of that year. The Guland family therefore now owned two properties in the Back Wynd which together, by 1899, were in the possession of Charles Gulland, Writer of Falkland, and his wife Mary. On 25th May 1920 Mrs. Mary Gulland, the widow of Charles sold the properties acquired by earlier members of the Gulland family to the Falkland War Memorial Committee.

The first definite sighting of the Falkland Islands was in 1592 but the Falkland Islands werenot landed upon untill 1690 by HMS Welfare at Bold Cove near port Howard, they were driven there in a storm. The Lexington Incident In 1831 Louis Vernet who was appointed Govenor of the Falklands by Buenos Aires seized three united states Sealers which had been Sealing in the islands despite his proclaimed restrictions on such activities. The American government did not acknowledge Vernets right to do this so the US corvette Lexington landed an armed party and sacked Vernets small colony at Port Louis (Puerto de Soledad) and then declaired the islands free of all government. Another Govenor was sent from Buenos Aires in 1832 but was subsequently murdered by the remenants of Vernets garrison. The Anarchy was temporarily ended by the appearance of HMS Clio, the storekeeper William Dickenson was left in charge after HMS Clio's departure and was later joined by Mathew Brisbane one of Vernets associates. They made effort to bring law to the islands but were eventually murdered by a group of gauchos. On receiving this news the HMS Challenger sailed to the Falklands, arriving on 9th January 1834. Lieutenant Henry Smith began a period that for one short interruption lasts until the present day.

    Extractions: History Although there's some evidence that Patagonian Indians reached the Falklands in rudimentary canoes, the islands were uninhabited when Europeans began to frequent the South Atlantic in the 17th century. A British expedition made the first documented landing in 1690, whereupon they claimed the islands for the crown and named the sound between the two main islands after a British naval officer, Viscount Falkland. The name was later applied to the whole island group. No European power established a settlement on the islands until France landed a garrison at Port Louis on East Falkland in 1764. (A small community of fishermen from St Malo lent the islands their French name, Îles Malouines, from which the Spanish Islas Malvinas derives.) When Spain caught wind of the settlers' presence, they pressured the French government to remove the garrison by citing the papal Treaty of Tordesillas, which had divided the New World between Spain and Portugal. The French complied, and in 1767 the Spanish went on to oust a British settlement at West Falkland's Port Egmont too. (Under threat of war, Spain restored the settlement the following year; the British gave it up of their own accord in 1774, though they held tight to their territorial claims.) The Spanish erected a penal colony at Port Louis, only to abandon it in the early 18th century as the town's ranks swelled with maverick whalers and sealers. In the late 1820s, nearly a decade after Buenos Aires declared its independence from Spain, a government-backed entrepreneur from Buenos Aires, Louis Vernet, moved to the Falklands and asserted himself as its governor. In 1831, his seizure of three American sealing ships triggered reprisals from a hot-headed US naval officer, whose retaliatory attack left Port Louis beyond restoration. Vernet scampered back to Buenos Aires, leaving a token Argentine force in Port Louis until 1833, when they were expelled by the returning British.

    Extractions: On 2 April 1982, the day of the invasion, destroyers and frigates exercising off Gibraltar under Rear Admiral ‘Sandy’ Woodward were ordered south. They were joined by the carriers Hermes and Invincible, loaded with Sea Harrier fighters as well as amphibious ships and merchant ships were taken up from the trade for use as troopships. These were also three nuclear powered submarines to cover the surface ships. In overall command was Commander-in-Chief Fleet, Admiral Sir John Fieldhouse at his headquarters at Northwood near London. Woodward commanded the carrier task group while Commodore Mike Clapp was in charge of the amphibious ships. First the island of South Georgia was recaptured in operations that included helicopters sinking an Argentine submarine, Santa Fe. As he neared the Falklands Woodward felt vulnerable to the threat of Argentine aircraft, both carrier and land based, missile armed surface ships and submarines. His concerns led to approval being given to sink any Argentine warships outside Argentine territorial waters; HMS Conqueror was at the time in touch with the cruiser General Belgrano which was duly sunk. This ended the threat of the Argentine carrier and surface ships, which took refuge in coastal waters. Argentine submarines were ineffective due to torpedo problems and effective British anti-submarine warfare.

The only town is also the capital of the region, Port Stanley, and it is from there that the British territories of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands are administered. With a total population of only a couple thousand stalwart individuals (and many more sheep and livestock) the Falklands seems an odd place to fight a war over, but that's exactly what happened in 1982. Seventy-two days later the conflict was over. The British forces, which had been outnumbered from the start, had cobbled together an invasion force of leaky ships without adequate air cover to fight a war thousands of miles away from England over mostly empty rock. While sounding like a recipe for defeat the British forces triumphed easily over the Argentine forces, capturing 11,000 prisoners and suffering only a couple hundred casualties.
