In other words, beyond our achey bones, our tired feet and our multi-colored real life soap operas, lurks a dimension that is more than the body, the persona, the ego and all the 'trappings and the suits of woe' as Hamlet would say-a dimension where there isn't a 'you' and 'me' but rather a synergy that is more than all that, a space for the eternal to rest within the temporal. Ethics Of Hunting philosophy thesis from Balliol College at Oxford University by Justin Alexander, addressing the morality of foxhunting, coursing, beagling and falconry. http://www.justinalexander.net/huntingethics.htm

I also wrote (in an internet cafe in Amman, Jordan!) an expanded version of section 5, " May a Christian Hunt? ", for Third Way magazine in April 2001. Introduction Bibliography During recent years British society has been engaged in a passionate debate on the issue of fox-hunting. The prominence of this issue within the media and parliament is comparable with the abortion debate in the US. However all this attention has resulted in a great deal of heat while shedding very little light on the central ethical question: Is hunting wrong, and if so why? This paper looks at ways of answering this question. I will clarify the assumptions underlying the different moral arguments, and trace out the consequences of particular judgements on hunting into the wider arena of human-animal relations.

I had always concentrated my thinking (such as it is) on Plato, Machiavelli and Nietzsche. In any case, I owe Edward, Gary and Sunthar (and Marilynn too!) a debt of gratitude for their showing me how much I had to learn. Not that I have profited from it! Oh no, I am still the (onto/meta/theo) nihilist I always wasonly better read. I would still deny the possibility of meaningful (or philosophical) transformation to the vast majority of human beings; which isnt to deny the possibility of mythical transformation of these same people by philosophical interventionism. On the contrary! Oh God, on the contrary! One might now object that the extraordinary peopleNietzsche would say exceptions, Averroes would say the people of dialectic while Protagoras would say the mortals that rule the citycertainly arent deceived. But just as all (at least all modern or contemporary) religions are in some sense a philosophy for the (ordinary) people, and I certainly think this is true, then we can perhaps infer that all theoryby this I mean the supposed way out of our various deceptive (physical or cultural or religious) worldsis little more than a religion for the exceptions.

Extractions: A Ranking of Graduate Programs in Philosophy in the English-Speaking World APPLYING TO GRADUATE SCHOOLS Most of the top 20-or-so programs receive between 150 and 250 applications, and admit typically 5% to 15% of that total. Despite occasional upturns in the job market for philosophy teachers, the bottom line remains that the market is fickle and unpredictable. Most of the students at the very top programs secure tenure-track jobs; most of the students at weaker programs do not. But all students considering graduate school must think about their willingness to move to new, and perhaps unattractive places, in order to secure a position in academia at the conclusion of their studies. Students should also keep in mind that many, perhaps most, of the academic positions in philosophy in the United States are at institutions of higher learning that have as their primary function general education, rather than intensive training in philosophy. There is, moreover, a growing culture gap between what is taught at the leading graduate programs (moral realism, naturalistic theories of mental content, theories of truth) and what sorts of jobs are available (openings for specialists in African-American philosophy, environmental ethics, history of modern philosophy with an emphasis on race and gender issues). However, data for the 1995-96 academic year (collected by the American Philosophical Association) showed that areas like African and African-American Philosophy, Asian Philosophy, and Feminism were

Extractions: Welcome to the Georgetown Philosophy Department The Georgetown University Philosophy Department is a vibrant community full of intellectual energy across an unusually broad range of philosophical traditions, from analytic to continental, topical to historical. The department offers both Ph.D. and M.A. programs. We expect our students, whatever their areas of specialization, to understand the systematic foundations of the positions they propose to defend and to be familiar with the origins of both the issues they address and the manner in which they intend to address them. It is for this reason that the graduate program has special requirements in logic, metaphysics, and epistemology and offers regularly scheduled courses on the major figures and periods in the history of this subject The faculty's broad diversity of styles and interests makes it impossible for someone to complete his or her course of studies knowing only one way of doing philosophy. We do not hope that our students will graduate without any established philosophical preferences. Instead we try to make sure that their approach is based on an informed comparison and that it is associated with the awareness that there is frequently more than one intelligent way to address a problem.
