Maps of World People of Estonia The ancestors of Estonians seem to have settled on the Baltic shores around 3500 BC, and were soon organized in loosely federated small states. Ethnic Estonians are a majority in the population amounting to almost 64%. Russians come second. Many of the Russians or their ancestors settled in Estonia after the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) annexed the republic in 1940. Estonia is highly urbanized and about 69 percent of the people live in cities or towns, with nearly one-third of the total population residing in the capital, Tallinn. About 46 percent of the people are Christians. Estonia has an adult literacy rate of nearly 100 percent. Education is compulsory for 9 years starting from age 7. Economy of Estonia The Economy of Estonia was agriculture based in the early 1900s. Soviet rule resulted into collective economics, but after independence in the 1990s, Estonia transformed its economy from a centrally planned system to a free market. Estonia is a member of the World Trade Organization and is steadily moving toward a modern market economy with increasing ties to the West, including the pegging of its currency to the euro. The strong electronics and telecom sectors have benefited the economy. The economy of Estonia is greatly influenced by developments in Finland, Sweden, and Germany, its major trading partners.

As a result of centuries of Danish, Swedish, German, and Russian rule, the idea of an independent Estonian state had already been raised in the late 19th century and came true in 1918 when Estonia attained independence from the Russian Empire. Forcibly incorporated into the USSR in 1940, it regained its freedom in 1991, with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since the last Russian troops left in 1994, Estonia has been free to promote economic and political ties with Western Europe. Since April 2004 Estonia is a member of NATO and member of the European Union since May 2004.

Actually I didn't know it, because of the Soviet secrecy, but my second Uncle in Estonia Arne Timusk is a champion rally driver. When I visited in 1993 Arne drove us about in his lada. He told us that he had recieved many free ladas to drive for the Soviet team. Even now after independence he still drives in rallies. He is also an all round sportsman staying fit even inviting us to swim with him in the Baltic sea. My brother has a book that Arnes' daughter Aive brought him when she visited in 1989. The book is about wrestling. In fact, it is the story of a famous wrestler. When in the old town in Tallinn I looked out over the precipice of the old fort. Below was a soccer or football field. The Estonian's enjoy singing. In fact, the revolution that brought Estonia's second chance at independence was callled the singing revolution. My aunt has made regular trips to Estonia to sing in choir groups. There is a large outdoor song hall in Tallinn and I had the pleasure to visit it and would one day like to sing my own English music there.

Extractions: IBS ESTONIAN HISTORY IN BRIEF Ancient Times (8th millennium BC 13th century AD) After the last Ice Age, Estonia was inhabited by a people whose ethnic identity is unknown. There are signs of human activity from the middle of the 8th millennium BC. In the mid-3rd millennium BC, Finno-Ugric tribes arrived from the East and became mixed with the forerunners of the Baltic people who had previously migrated here. Estonians have thereafter lived on their land for 5,000 years, being one of the longest settled European peoples. The oldest written record of Estonia was made by al-Idrisi and dates from 1154. By the beginning of the 13th century, a state had not yet developed, feudal system was unknown, there were no towns, and the effect of Christianity was minor. There was a population of approximately 100,000 people. RULED BY VARIOUS POWERS (13th century 1918) Early Fight For Independence At the end of the 12th century, the German armed, religious expansion to the east increased. Warfare commenced at the beginning of the 13th century, when the pagan society fought against the more advanced European society. German, Danish, Swedish, and Russian conquerors encountered armed resistance. By the year 1227, Estonia had been conquered, and this meant that Estonia's development became tied to that of Europe. The Estonian native inhabitants made numerous attempts to restore their independence the largest, yet unsuccessful, attempt was the St. George's Night Uprising (134345). Middle Ages (12271558)

One of the most important things in life is to know which bridges to cross and which to burn, says Violetta Sokolenko, Rector of the Tallinn Commercial College in Estonia. `Every day I try to burn the bridge which leads to fear.' When the small Baltic state emerged from under the shadow of the Soviet empire in 1990, many of the Russian minority left to return to their homeland. Sokolenko, then a researcher at Tallinn's Institute of Pedagogy, asserts she was not tempted to do the same. Rather, she `burnt the bridge of any hesitation' and stayed in Estonia. She set up a private college for 250 Russian students intending to go into business and industry in Estonia, with the aim of building bridges between the communities.
