I respectfully ask Mr. Shawcross to be more candid and explain to his readers what may have prompted him to take such a cheap shot at the government of Eritrea. GHIRMAI HAILE. Cincinnati. Today, a fragile peace prevails and Eritrea faces the gigantic tasks of rebuilding its infrastructure and of developing its economy after more than 30 years of conflict. OVERVIEW FACTS LEADERS MEDIA A former Italian colony, Eritrea was occupied by the British in 1941. In 1952 the United Nations resolved to establish it as an autonomous entity federated with Ethiopia as a compromise between Ethiopian claims for sovereignty and Eritrean aspirations for independence. However, 10 years later the Ethiopian emperor, Haile Selassie, decided to annex it, triggering a 32-year-long armed struggle. This culminated in independence shortly after an alliance of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) and a coalition of Ethiopian resistance movements defeated Haile Selassie's communist successor, Mengistu Haile Mariam. In 1993, in a referendum supported by Ethiopia, the Eritrean people voted almost unanimously in favour of independence, leaving Ethiopia landlocked.

In the drier coastal plain and the arid regions of the north and west, farm animal raising precontrolled. Italian and British colonial policy in the 19th and early 20th centuries favored the production of raw materials for export. During this time, light industry was developed. By most accounts, Eritrea enjoyed a higher level of economic development than Ethiopia at the time of the 1952 federation. Ethiopias annexation of Eritrea caused industrial development to be curtailed, and many factories were closed and moved to Ethiopia. After 1974, the Marxist government of Ethiopia placed most Eritrean industry under state control.

Extractions: Documents menu Eritrea emerged from its long war of independence in 1993 only to plunge once again into war, first with Yemen and then, more devastatingly, with its old adversary, Ethiopia. It now faces the gigantic task of rebuilding a country ravaged by more than 30 years of conflict, its infrastructure, buildings and fields destroyed. A former Italian colony, Eritrea was occupied by the British in 1941. In 1993, in a referendum supported by Ethiopia, the Eritrean people voted almost unanimously in favour of independence, leaving Ethiopia landlocked. However, by 1998 the two sides had fallen out over Ethiopian access to the Eritrean ports of Massawa and Assab. Unequal trade terms, and border disputes around the town of Badme contributed to a resumption of hostilities. This formally ended with a peace deal in June 2000, but not before leaving both sides with thousands of soldiers dead and the two Eritrean ports destroyed.

Extractions: Head of government: President Isaias Afwerki President Isaias Afwerki. President Isaias Afwerki and his cabinet of 16 ministers, regional governors and other officials form the 24-member State Council, the executive branch of the Eritrean government, chaired by the president. An unicameral 150-member National Assembly which comprises 75 Central Committee members of the ruling PFDJ, together with 75 others (representatives elected by the general population, of whom at least 11 must be women, and 15 members representing Eritreans living abroad) form the legislative branch of the democratic government of Eritrea. The National Assembly establishes the domestic and foreign policies of the government, regulates the State Council's execution of these policies and approves the country's budget. The National Assembly elects the president directly. The judiciary consists of courts at national (Supreme Court), regional (10 provincial courts), and village levels (29 district courts). Special Sharia courts subjugate to the Muslim population, following Islamic Sharia law in family cases.
Eritrea: Two Students Die In Government Clampdown Two students have died and up to 2000 others are being detained in a detention camp following protests against the government. http://www.wsws.org/articles/2001/aug2001/erit-a24.shtml
Extractions: 24 August 2001 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author Two students have died and up to 2,000 others are being detained in a detention camp following protests against the government. The camp in Wia, 30 kilometres from the Eritrean port of Massawa, is located in a desert region, and temperatures can reach as high as 49 degrees Centigrade (120 degrees Fahrenheit). It is reported that the students are being detained without adequate food, water and shelter. The students were arrested either in their dormitories or outside the high court where they had gathered to attend a court hearing involving Kesete. They were kept overnight in a soccer stadium before being bussed out to Wia. The 15 represent a section of the Eritrean bourgeoisie who are seeking to distance themselves from Afwerki and are concerned about the growing resentment to his rule. They are all long-standing members of the PFDJ and its forerunner, the Eritrean Peoples Liberation Front (EPLF) who supported the war with Ethiopia. It is probable that the opposition to Afwerki within the ruling clique reflects concerns over the loss of support from the West. Those who have recently criticised Afwerki include the Eritrean ambassador to Sweden, Norway and Finland, who resigned her post, and the ambassador to Germany, who was recalled and may face prosecution by the Special Court. Afwerki is known to favour closer relations with Arab countries and hopes to join the League of Arab States.
