Cell biology laboratory exercises were developed using fluorescence microscopes equipped with contrast enhancing optics, video projection and recording systems, and computerized image collection equipment. After learning the microscopy methods through collaborative exercises, students conduct exploratory and original experiments. With a diverse set of fluorescent probes and different cell types, students can conduct novel experiments. This research-like environment is possible because students use equipment usually found only in research labs. The color video projection system provides essentially unlimited viewing and allows the student to project images of their preparations to the rest of the class for analysis and discussion. These exercises could be adapted for use in other classroom situations with similar equipment. NOTE: The web-based resources for these lab exercises have not undergone revision as planned. We hope to get the revisions completed during summer 2000. Access to the instructors' notes has been requested by a number of people, so the 1999 links are back in place.
