GRACE Oysters, a food enjoyed in ancient times and popular in America since colonial days, are still on menus. What’s ironic is that, despite the health-consciousness of these times, oysters are most often consumed raw—though there are health warnings against eating them that way—and are decreasingly popular in cooked dishes, which present no known perils. Since 1995, the Federal Drug Administration has cautioned that there’s the risk of “vibrio vulnificus infection” from raw oysters. “Although this bacterium is not a danger to most healthy people,” the FDA notes, “40 percent of infections with Vibrio vulnificus are fatal.” It adds: “The bacterium occurs naturally, not as a result of pollution, so eating oysters from reputable sources does not offer protection. Proper cooking is necessary to completely kill Vibrio vulnificus and eliminate its threat.” Yet, the temptation of a fresh raw oyster surely rivals that of an apple in the Garden of Eden. I admit it: I’m an oyster-a-holic.

Extractions: Online troops home poll BY STUART MUNCKTON Reading the mainstream press over the last month, one could be forgiven for believing that Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez has become so unpopular that his government is facing a revolt by the country's workers. The oil industry provides some 50% of government revenue and accounts for a third of Venezuela's gross national product. Venezuela is the world's fifth largest oil producing country and is the third largest supplier of petroleum to the United States. The Chavez government put a halt to PDVSA management's plans for full privatisation of the company, and introduced legislation requiring all of PDVSA's revenues to come under government control. This helps explains why Venezuela's big capitalist families have been so desperate to get rid of Chavez. These families are also being supported by the US government, which is acting to defend the profits of US oil corporations. In many ways, though, what has frightened Venezuelan capitalists and their US backers most of all is the mass radicalisation of the workers and peasants that has been encouraged by the Chavez government. The working majority, overwhelmingly of black or indigenous descent, are no longer willing to be ruled by a wealthy elite that, in different forms, has dominated the country's political life since the Spanish conquest. Despite controlling the private media, the elite's support among the population has narrowed since the failed April military coup, while the workers and peasants have become further radicalised and organised.

Realizing that even small changes in the way cities build and plan could have huge repercussions in the number of lives lost in the event of an earthquake, Stanford alumnus Brian Tucker founded the Palo Alto-based GeoHazards International back in 1993. Through this nonprofit organization, he and his small staff have partnered with businesses, government agencies, other nonprofits and groups of local people in cities throughout the world in an effort to raise awareness about earthquake risk and to help communities improve earthquake safety measures. "We decided we wanted to unite nonprofit organizations that could spread the methodologies developed in places like Japan and California to poorer countries with even greater earthquake risk," Tucker said. After securing financial support from OYO Corporation, a Japanese company that makes geotechnical instruments, Tucker started pilot projects in Quito, Equador and Kathmandu, Nepal.

Extractions: By James Reynolds in Santiago Heads of state from Latin America have been meeting for a summit in the Colombian city of Cartagena. The summit is the 14th annual meeting of the Rio Group, an alliance, which represents 19 countries in the region. High on the agenda of the two-day meeting has been democratisation and the need to ease the impact of economic austerity measures. It has been a summit full of promises and commitments. Colombia's President, Andres Pastrana, has called on countries in the region to reaffirm their support for democracy. Venezuela's leader, Hugo Chavez, has made an appeal for development, happiness and peace in Latin America. More importantly, the summit has been a chance for Peru's President, Alberto Fujimori, to defend his recent election victory, which was condemned by observers as unfair. The fact that Mr Fujimori has been welcomed to the Rio Group summit demonstrates that other countries here have accepted his victory.

Extractions: Zimbabwe (case no 2038) was mentioned as a specially serious and urgent case and shows the continued interference and harassment including arrests and detention of trade unionists. As also could be seen in case no. 2081 the Committee again strongly requests the amendment of the legislation that gives excessive wide power of the authorities to enter and search trade union premises including its financial records at any time and without any reason. In addition, in cases no. 1937 and 2027 , the Committee again requests the amendment of the new Labour Amendment Bill, so that the trade unions should be able to take industrial action in questions of economic and social policy, without any sanctions imposed. Apparently there is no political will at all by the Government to follow the recommendations made by the Committee and the GB and to respect freedom of association! We just learned that yesterday (November 18) 350 people were arrested in Zimbabwe. They belong to the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) and other civil society organizations. ZCTU President, Vice-President and General Secretary are among them.

Increase in oceanic temperatures : Local fisheries of small pelagic species declined and fishmeal prices increased. Other warm-water species replaced these species. Some birds and mammals that fed from this fishery, on the continental shelf and around the Galapagos Islands, starved to death. Coral reef bleaching was another adverse impact. Increase in rainfall along the coastal provinces during periods longer than the rainy season : Rainfall produced flooding, mudslides, infrastructure destruction, collapsed bridges, agricultural devastation and poor sanitary conditions which became health problems. Secondary impacts on the economy of these coastal provinces were also evident.
