Extractions: The landlocked Caspian Sea is the largest inland body of water on earth. Surrounded by Azerbaijan Iran Kazakhstan Russia , and Turkmenistan , the Caspian Sea is home to myriad ecosystems. At the meeting point of the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, the Caspian region includes steppe land in the north, cold, continental deserts and semi-deserts in the northeast and east, and warmer mountain and highland systems in the south and southwest. The coastal wetlands of the Caspian basin include many shallow, saline pools, which attract a variety of bird life and biodiversity; over 400 species are unique to the Caspian. In addition, the sea's native sturgeon is famous the world around for the roe it produces: sturgeon from the Caspian Sea accounts for approximately 90% of the world's caviar industry. Although oil has been produced in what is present-day Azerbaijan for more than 100 years, the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 led to heightened interest in the region, especially among Western energy companies that previously were shut out of the area. The Caspian Sea's energy potential already was well-known, and the confirmation of that potential with the discovery of significant hydrocarbon deposits in the mid-1990s brought an influx of foreign investment in energy development in the region, particularly in Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.

Extractions: Iceland has been a member of the Arctic Council since it was established in 1996. Other members include the United States, Canada, Russia, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The Arctic Council is primarily concerned with co-operative efforts in the areas of environmental protection and sustainable development in the Arctic. Two Arctic Council programmes are based in Iceland, the CAFF (Conservation of Aarctic Fauna and Flora) and PAME (Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment). Established in 1992, the Council of the Baltic Sea States aims at promoting and facilitating co-operation between the member states in the areas of economy and trade, democracy and human rights, culture and education, communications, energy and environmental protection. Members include Germany, Russia, Polland, the three Baltic countries and the five Nordic countries, including Iceland. The European Commission also takes part in the work of the Council. Iceland was a founding member of the Organization for European Economic Co-operation (OEEC) in 1948. It also became a founding member of the successor body, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 1961. The Ambassador of Iceland in Paris is the Permanent Representative of Iceland to the OECD Council, which has its headquarters in Paris.

Contact Eutrophication Invasive Species The Baltic Sea watershed, encompassing Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia and Sweden, is an area of profound environmental risk. Significant amounts of fresh water flow into the Baltic Sea daily, due to high annual precipitation in the catchment area and from over 200 large rivers carrying fresh water. The mouth of the Baltic Sea, where it meets the North Sea, is less than 30 kilometers wide. As a result the water is brackish, neither fresh water nor salt water, but with a salt concentration in between. With minimal surf and a narrow opening to the North Sea, it takes about 30 years for water in the shallow Baltic Sea to be completely replaced. This slow turnover means that environmentally damaging events such as agricultural runoff, sewage, ballast discharges and oil spills are very slow to dissipate.
