REM ToxLab - Home Page Located in the School of Resource and environmental Management (REM). Includes overview, objectives, staff, projects, ongoing research, mathematical models, publications and courses. http://www.rem.sfu.ca/toxicology/
Extractions: Email: toxlab@sfu.ca Info for Students The objective of our research program is to develop better methods for measuring and assessing the exposure and toxicological effects of commercial substances in wildlife and humans. The effects of a number of chemical substances (such as PCBs, dioxins, PAHs) have been recognized for some time but remain of concern because of their continued presence in landfills, harbors and former production sites and global distribution. Some other chemicals substances such as PBDEs and PFOS have recently emerged as contaminants of concern, but little is known about their behaviour in the environment. In Canada, 23,000 chemicals were in commerce as of 1986 and are included on the Canadian Domestic Substances List (DSL). Approximately 5,000 of these chemicals are high volume production chemicals. Globally, approximately 100,000 chemicals are in commerce and new chemicals are being produced at a rate of 1000-1500/year. The environmental behaviour of the great majority of these substances is largely unknown. Our research aims to reliably anticipate the environmental behavior of these chemicals such that health effects in wildlife and humans can be prevented and costly remediation of pollution problems can be avoided.
