Extractions: ENVIRONMENTAL SITE ASSESSMENTS Historically, federal and state legislation and litigation have held parties involved in real estate transactions potentially liable for cleaning up environmental contamination. In other words, the purchaser of any piece of property buys not only the land, but any hidden environmental or health hazards that come with it. These hazards may consist of anything from spilled chemicals polluting groundwater at an industrial site to asbestos insulation in an office building. Even apparently undeveloped property may have adversely impacted soil and groundwater quality from former use. It's not just the purchaser who is at risk. Some states have legislation requiring property owners to identify potential contamination prior to a sale, or to clean it up themselves. Developers and lending institutions may also be held liable as a source of cleanup financing, even if previous owners or users of the property caused the contamination. Avoid the Risks Versar is a leading provider of environmental site assessments for lending institutions, developers, law firms, investors, and corporate personnel responsible for site selection services and property acquisition. The goal of the workshop was to recommend tests and procedures that can be used to verify the performance of the company's low range differential pressure (LRDP) leak detection system for underground storage tanks (UST). Several engineers and scientists from government, academia, and the private sector were on hand at the workshop to lend their expertise during the workshop.

Extractions: Greg Koller The Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is one of America's premier environmental research organizations. Since 1965, Pacific Northwest has made significant contributions to the field of environmental science and technology, and today is applying its unique resources, facilities and expertise to solve some of the nation's most challenging environmental problems. A large part of the laboratory's $550 million annual budget is spent on environmental-related research in areas ranging from remediation and pollution prevention to global climate change and marine science. creating a process that uses microbes to selectively degrade sulfur in used tire rubber, enabling the rubber to be recycled into new tires without loss of product performance developing a safe and cost-effective alternative to incineration that turns hazardous organic wastes into inert end-products such as carbon dioxide creating a unique coating that transforms silica into a super sponge for efficient absorption of mercury and other heavy metals from water and other liquids discovering enzymes capable of withstanding the harsh environments found in many industrial waste streams for development of new bioprocesses

By the year 2008, drinking water will be safer, lighter weight cars will get 80 miles to a gallon and food crops will be engineered genetically to require less pesticide and fertilizer. In its first environmental technology forecast, a team of researchers at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has identified the 10 most important technological breakthroughs that will lead to a cleaner environment while providing major benefits to consumers over the next decade. Technologies that help prevent problems before they arise surfaced as a major theme. "Our team members represent decades of experience on national and international environmental issues including global climate change, environmental technology development and remediation of major waste sites worldwide," says Gerry Stokes, associate laboratory director at Pacific Northwest. "Dreams and demos now, these technologies will have real impacts by 2008." This is the first of an ongoing dialogue to forecast the direction environmental science and technology is heading in the 21st century, according to Stokes. "Our hope is to provide this look ahead on an annual basis to help enhance public understanding and government decision making," he says.
