This course is an interactive, hands-on course (lectures and field investigations) that examines ecology of freshwater fish faunas and relationships between biodiversity, biogeography, and anthropogenic environmental effects. Students will develop a baseline data set for aquatic biodiversity inventories, determine biogeographic relationships of southern Balkan river drainages, and their application to natural resource management and environmental ethics. b. Non-biology majors: Course title: Experiencing Science (BIO-131; 3-hr credit). This course uses interactive, hands-on learning approaches in field studies and lectures to develop students skills and understanding science as a process (scientific methods) with experiences in making observations and collections, record keeping, hypothesis formulation and testing, data analysis, and reaching conclusions. Students not only will learn information in their coursework, but will make significant contributions to the understanding of the freshwater fish biodiversity in Greece, which can be applied to management plans of ecosystems in the region. Information generated by students will be publishable. Overall, the UR Summer Environmental Studies Program in Greece will heighten students knowledge and understanding of the complex relationships between various disciplines (environmental, geographic, biological, economic, political, and social) that have shaped the environmental conditions in Greece and Europe.

Founding members of the Environmental Exhibit Collaborative include the EcoTarium, the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness, New Hampshire, and the ECHO at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vermont. The Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, Vermont, is also involved in the regional project, playing an advisory role. Working together, members will develop conceptual ideas; share design, fabrication, and staff resources; and exchange collections and expertise to create high-quality interactive exhibits designed expressly for small and mid-sized museums. Each exhibit will be about 1,200 square feet in size and will be displayed at each of the museums for up to six months. In addition, exhibits will be designed to tour and will be available to travel to other museums, nature centers and aquariums in the region. New England is fortunate to have a rich array of small and mid-sized museums that play unique roles in their communities.
