Effective protection of the environment requires activity on many wide-ranging different fronts - for example, from acting to limit global environmental threats (such as global warming) to safeguarding individuals from the effects of poor air quality or toxic chemicals. It is one of the four objectives of sustainable development. Actions to protect the environment also produce benefits such as housing (through improved energy efficiency of buildings), social progress (through action to combat fuel poverty) and economic growth (through more efficient use of resources, such as re-use, recycling and recovery of waste). For the first time, the Federal Environmental Agency (UBA) has calculated a characteristic value which reflects developing trends in German environmental protection in a single figurethe German Environment Index, or DUX ( Deutscher Umwelt Index ) for short. The DUX is comprised of various values stemming from the Environment Barometer for Germany on climate, air, soil, water, energy and raw materials. Whats the purpose of the DUX? As a striking indicator, the DUX allows environmental policy to be checked, set goals have more binding force, and it clarifies the need for action. It does not describe the state of the environment in Germany, but rather illustrates the degree to which environmental policy goals have been achieved in important critical areas. How did the DUX originate?
