Ancient Civilization did not begin in what we think of as the West. It did not start in Paris or Berlin or London or Prague or Brussels or Stockholm. It grew out of the Mediterranean breezes, the sun and desert of Northern Africa, the Persian and West Asian lands. To study Ancient Civilization is to travel - across parts of Africa, southern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia to India. It is a linking voyage, not a reducing trip. It CONNECTS peoples, ideas, patterns, developments, organizations, wars, religions, art, architecture, food and drink. It is a human endeavor about a human story.

Aha! Or is it King Menes? by Marie Parsons Manetho and Herodotus are the "best" historical sources for the tradition that Menes was the unifier and first King of a unified Egypt. Manetho lived in Sebennytos in the Delta during the Ptolemaic period. He was a priest, perhaps chief priest, of Ra, and served as a consultant to the early Ptolemaic rulers on the cult of Serapis. Ahmose I, Founder of the 18th Dynasty and the New Kingdom of Ancient Egypt by Richard Warner Egypt's 18th Dynasty that established the New Kingdom is, to most people interested in Egypt, a dynasty of stars. It is the dynasty of Tutankhamun who was a fairly minor king, but perhaps the best known of any of the pharaohs. It was also the dynasty of the well known Akhenaten, and of Queen Hatshepsut. The founder of this Dynasty is less well known to the general public, but unquestionably of major importance to Egyptian history. He was Ahmose I, during who's reign Egypt was finally and completely liberated from the Hyksos.

Ancient Egyptian art shows this to be a fairly accurate, if somewaht dramtic depiction of how a young prince in ancient Egypt might dress. No ancient civilization has so captured the Western mind as that of Egypt. The impressive archetectural remains and the the close connection with Greece and Rome, and the Biblical links probably explain this fascination. Another factor surely is the Egyptian obsession with the after life leaving vast treasure troves of archeolohical evidemce including mummies which have fuled the popular interest in Egypt. All of this has attracted the interest of both scholars as well as the wider public. There is cerainly much to ponder with ancient Egypt. The origins of ancient Egypt are still clouded in mystery. Even what we know inspires considerable awe: a mysterious religion with inspiring monumental architecture, including temples, pyramids and the enigmatic Sphinx. Traditionally Egypt is composed of Upper (southern) and Lower (northern) regiins. They were once separate politically, but eventually united by Menes the ruler of Upper Egypt in the 35th century BC. Lower Egypt comprised the region from the Nile Mediterrean Delta south to a imaginary line at about the 30° N lattitude. Upper Egypt is the region south of this line. This is confusing to our modern concept of gepgraphy, but of course to the Egyptians what was important was the flow of the Nile.

Her hair is painted a bright yellow stippled with little red horizontal lines, and her skin is white. This is the earliest known evidence of blondism in the world."[1] The ancient Libyans extended from the Canary Islands across North Africa to the Delta of the Nile. The western third of the Nile Delta was occupied by Libyans during the early years of recorded civilization.[2] Is it possible that a white Caucasian people may have composed the bulk of the ruling class in ancient Egypt?
