Introduction With the creation of time travel it is now possible for us to travel to anytime and place in history! The Back in Time Travel agency has hired you to create a brochure that will explain Ancient Egypt to potential travelers. Time travel requires a four months stay. We are not sure why, but on visits less than four months travelers tend to disappear on the trip home! Because visits are so long travelers must work, attend school, and participate in everyday activities while in Ancient Egypt. This also means you may not travel back in time to do your research but must use the Internet, videos and books, as well as encyclopedias. TOP The Task Your task is to create a tri-fold travel brochure of Ancient Egypt. This brochure must include: Map of Ancient Egypt A Time Line Daily Life in Ancient Egypt You're own personal review of Ancient Egypt. Extractions: The ancient Egyptians interpreted every occurrence in terms of the relationship between natural and supernatural forces. Those phenomena that figured prominently in their lives included the annual cycle of the Nile River's flood, the enormous size and unchanging harshness of the surrounding desert, and the daily cycle of the sun's appearance in the east, gradual movement across the sky, and eventual disappearance in the west. The ancient Egyptians developed a world view in which these and other events and conditions were attributed to the actions of multiple, related gods and goddesses. The ancient Egyptians imagined the world to be a far different place from what we now know it to be. They believed the earth was a flat platter of clay afloat on a vast sea of water from which the Nile River sprung. In this fundamental description of the world, the forces of nature were identified as divine descendants of the creator god. When we try to make some sense out of the many Egyptian gods and goddesses, we must keep two important facts in mind.

Extractions: Seminar Introduction What was daily life like for the ancient Egyptians? In many ways, people today share similar values and life waysa strong emphasis on the nuclear family, the love for social activities, and an attachment to appearance and fashion. In this seminar Emily Teeter, an Egyptologist at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, and Douglas J. Brewer, professor of anthropology at the University of Illinois, Urbana, investigate the particular values and societal expectations of the ancient Egyptians. While the nuclear family was the core of Egyptian society, marriage and marriage contracts were largely seen as a means of regulating the transfer of property. Compared to other areas of the ancient world, Egyptian women held stronger social positions and expanded legal rights, which included the ability to hold and bequeath property and the right to initiate divorce. Childrenboth male and femaleheld a valued position in the family. Socially, the ancient Egyptians enjoyed many of the pleasures people cherish today: music, song, dance, games, and drink.

Extractions: Egyptian history is divided into three main periods: the Old (Pyramid Age), Middle, and New Kingdoms which define almost 3,000 years of continuous cultural and political development. Also displayed is a boat model that was made in the Middle Kingdom Period. This is possibly a model of a family funerary trip to a new world where daily activities continued much as they had in the realm of the living or it could represent a pilgrimage to Abydos, the burial site of Osiris. One of the seated persons (most likely the largest) is the deceased. Models of everyday scenes ensured their continuance through the afterlife. Shabtis are also featured in this gallery. They are small figures placed in a tomb for the benefit of their owner in the afterlife and are often found in sets of 365 (one for each day of the year). The older figures are from the late New Kingdom. The younger figures are stylistically more like miniature statues rather than mummy figures.
