Each year the river flooded its banks, leaving behind a fertile fringe of soil they called "the Black Land," while the desert all around the Nile valley was called "the Red Land." It was here the Ancient Egyptians built their homes. Family Life The people of ancient Egypt highly valued family life. They treasured children and regarded them as a great blessing. In the lower class families, the mother raised the children. The wealthy and nobility, had slaves and servants that helped take care of the children by attending to their daily needs. If a couple had no children, they would pray to the gods and goddesses for help. They would also place letters at the tombs of dead relatives asking them to use their influence with the gods. Magic was also used as an attempt to have children. In event that a couple still could not conceive a child, adoption was also an option. Although women were expected to obey their fathers and husbands, they were equal to men in many ways. They had the legal right to participate in business deals, own land, and were expected to represent themselves in court cases. Women even faced the same penalties as men. Sometimes wives and mothers of pharaohs were the "real" ruling power in government, though they ruled unknowingly to common people. Queen Hatshepsut was the only woman who ruled out right by declaring herself pharaoh. An Egyptian wife and mother were highly respected in this ancient society.

In pre-dynastic times, the deceased were placed in shallow graves, in the fetal position. Burial in the desert conditions resulted in natural mummification. Once they started the new practice of constructing formal tombs for burial, some form of artificial mummification was needed. Mummification was highly developed, by Old Kingdom times. It became very elaborate by the late New Kingdom. It then required some seventy days to complete the process. Many of the best preserved royal mummies date from the New Kingdom. Less complex mummification versions were performed on ordinary citizens. John Anthony West described in his book, The Travelers Key to Ancient Egypt , the process of a royal mummification as follows: (1) The brain extracted through the nostrils. (2) Removal of the viscera through an incision in the flank. (3) Sterilization of body cavity and viscera. (4) Viscera cleaned, treated, dehydrated, anointed, and coated with molten resin. (5) Body packed temporarily with natron (a naturally occurring mixture of carbonate, bicarbonate, chloride and sulphate of sodium, an effective dehydrating and preserving agent). (6) Body packed in natron for forty days. (7) Temporary packing materials removed. (8) Subcutaneous packing of limbs with sand, clay or other earthy material. (9) Body packed with resin-soaked linens, and fragrances such as myrrh and cinnamon. (10) Anointing with unguents. (11) Final treating and anointing of the body surfaces. (12) Elaborate wrapping in fine linen gauze, with innumerable amulets, magic symbols, and jewelry included in the wrapping.

He even relocated the nation's capital to his new city at Amarna. After his reign, his city and innovations were abandoned. The remains of his city, however, lie under the desert to this day. Excavations of Amarna have given Egyptologists a unique view of the lives of Ancient Egyptian artists, craftsmen, and officials. They have reveled houses, tombs, workshops, bakeries, administrative centers, and, of course, the many palaces of Akhenaten himself. This lecture presents aspects of the daily life and organization at Amarna. Kate Liszka Daily Life of the Ancient Egyptians Egyptian tomb models and wall paintings provide an accurate and revealing record of the way an ancient people lived. This information is complemented by numerous objects of daily life preserved in the unusually dry climate of Egypt and discovered through archaeological excavation. In this lecture, Dr. Olson will illustrate agriculture and food production, livestock and the items used by the Egyptians in their daily life.
