Extractions: J.E. Smithells Introduction The Agricultural Extension and Rural Development Department (previously the AERD Centre) has been actively concerned with the needs and changing roles of women in the context of agricultural and rural development since its inception. This concern has taken the form of research and publications, provision of a range of short courses and formal taught courses (including the institution of a Diploma level course in 1989), and contributions to the international discussion about the importance of women in rural development and the special issues which this raises. In 1968/69, the Overseas Development Ministry (now the Overseas Development Administration [ODA]) funded a survey by the AERDC of the training needs of women extension staff in selected African and Caribbean countries (Smithells, 1972). On the basis of the findings, a typology of training provision was proposed in terms of the functions of the training for both individuals and organisations: (a) Basic training

AEC 861- Agriculture In Economic Development Examine various theories of agricultural and rural economic development. Tuesday, August 28 Objectives of Course; Food and Agriculture in Developing http://www.msu.edu/course/aec/861/
Extractions: Michigan State University COURSE OBJECTIVES Examine the relationships between agriculture and other sectors of the economy during economic development. Examine various theories of agricultural and rural economic development. Analyze policy issues in the food and agricultural systems of low-income countries, as well as the policy process. Analyze how to accelerate agricultural and rural economic development. Discuss the role of the government, private sector and NGOs in agricultural development. Analyze case studies of regions. The course is a survey of agricultural development issues , primarily from a policy perspective. Although in analyzing policy the course draws heavily on basic concepts from economic theory, the course gives relatively little emphasis to formal analysis of economic growth models. BACKGROUND FOR THE COURSE Students should have a background in both microeconomics, equivalent to that provided by intermediate (300-level) courses, as well as some familiarity with application of economic analysis to development issues. Students lacking this background should consult with the instructor. Appropriate background material is given in M.P. Todaro
