Ecology enables you to understand how organisms interact to form habitats, communities, and ecosystems. Alphabetical Recent Up a category Animals and their environment A first step to understanding individual animals, and in turn populations of animals, is to understand the relationship they have with their environment. Population growth Populations are groups of individuals belonging to the same species that live in a shared region at the same time. Population interactions Populations of animals interact with each other and their environment in a variety of ways. This lesson examines some of the complex ways in which populations of animals influence each other including hebivory, predation, competition, coevolution, and symbiosis. Extractions: Welcome! This month will be devoted to everyone's favorite winter activity, Science Fair! Below you will find tips to help you complete your project, places around Jackson to find boards to display your project, and some great project ideas. What things will help me complete a better science project? Get started early! Don't try and wait until the week or night before to try and decide on a project. A good project can take several weeks, even months. Both you and your parents will be unhappy if you wait until the last minute. Choose a topic that interests you! If you try and do a project about something that you don't really like, you probably won't do your best work. If you can't think of something that you like, look at some of the ideas suggested in the sites below and go to the library and read about them. Maybe that will help! Do plenty of research and keep a good bibliography! Read all you can about your topic and your project and document everything you read as you go for your project bibliography (which you do need). Knowing lots about your topic will help you avoid problems later, and will make you very knowledgeable when it comes time for your project to be judged.

Course Information Welcome to ecology, Biology 318. The 5 main principles and the additional Your mastery of these skills will be reflected in your homework grades. http://www.marietta.edu/~mcshaffd/eco/sym/COURSE98.html
Extractions: Course Information Welcome to Ecology, Biology 318. The 5 main principles and the additional statements on the preceding page will form the outline for our course this semester. If you can master these concepts, you will have a solid understanding of ecology, the most complex of sciences. You will have several tools available to you this semester. This guidebook, The Symbiont , is your main tool. It takes you through each of the topics we will cover. It tells you what to read (and where to find it). It poses a central question to be answered, gives you my perspective on the question, and asks you some questions (in the form of homework) to insure that you understand the material. In "lecture", I will try to illustrate the main points with slides or examples, but I will not try to comprehensively explain the material in this guidebook or in your text. This is a junior-level course and you are able to READ. Of course, there will be material that you will still have questions about, and I hope to encourage you to bring those questions to class so that we can all address them. If, as a class, everyone participates in carefully reading the text and bringing to class the material that is most difficult, it will prevent me from giving you boring lectures on the material that you already understand and allow me to concentrate on the stuff that is more difficult. Ecology, like all of biology, is becoming more and more mathematical. We will make extensive use of computers at times to help understand complicated topics. In part, you will be using software I developed to model such things as population growth. This software does not assume much in the way of computer skills on your part. In other areas, however, you will need to make use of the computers to complete your assignments. I assume you are competent in using a word processor and a spreadsheet.
