Earth is a film which explores the social conflicts in pre-partition Lahore, India in 1947. Lenny, the narrator, recalls her time as an eight-year-old Parsee girl (Maia Sethna) whose experiences evolved from living in a comfortable and harmonious household, to witnessing the bloodshed that resulted from the division of British India into independent India and Pakistan. Focusing on Lenny as the eyes of all the events, the story of Earth involves Lenny, her nanny Shanta (Nandita Das), Dil Navaz or "Ice Candy Man" (Aamir Khan), Hasan the Masseur (Rahul Khanna), and others. This family of young friends who are all Muslims, Sikhs or Hindus regularly spend afternoons together in a park, cherishing each others' company and entertained by Shanta's beauty. A series of innocent yet very expressive scenes (such as Dil teaching Shanta how to fly a kite) portray the characters' playful relationships with each other. However, as each of them becomes a witness to their peoples being slaughtered Hindus and Sikhs against Muslims and Muslims against Hindus and Sikhs their old fraternal bonds become subject to the rawness of nationalistic and religious fervor. Earth is the only planet whose English name does not derive from Greek/Roman mythology. The name derives from Old English and Germanic. There are, of course, hundreds of other names for the planet in other languages . In Roman Mythology, the goddess of the Earth was Tellus - the fertile soil (Greek: Gaia terra mater - Mother Earth). It was not until the time of Copernicus (the sixteenth century) that it was understood that the Earth is just another planet. Mir space station and Earth's limb Earth, of course, can be studied without the aid of spacecraft. Nevertheless it was not until the twentieth century that we had maps of the entire planet. Pictures of the planet taken from space are of considerable importance; for example, they are an enormous help in weather prediction and especially in tracking and predicting hurricanes. And they are extraordinarily beautiful.

Qi wants to go home, but before he can do so, he needs to complete one more task for the Emperor: apprehend Captain Li Zai, aka "Butcher" Li (Jiang Wen, The Missing Gun Devils on the Doorstep ). Extractions: 3 stars out of 4 Repertorial theaters have just about vanished from the American landscape. There are a few left in some of the bigger cities and near some college campuses, but today's movie going public generally is stuck choosing between the latest massive action thriller or the latest ode to dumbness. Viewing an old film on the big screen is an option for fewer and fewer people. I am fortunate to live in an area where the demise of these old picture palaces is not yet complete. Besides the Stanford theater in Palo Alto, there are also places in Berkeley and San Francisco. Nearer to home is the lovely old Towne Theatre in San Jose. It is an art house and sometimes repertorial theater. Right now they are having their second science fiction festival. It lasts for three weeks, and they are showing several films per weeks.
