Extractions: Thirty-six years ago an inspiring national movement to protect the environment crystallized. Since America's first official Earth Day on April 22, 1970, New Jersey has become one of the leaders in recognizing environmental problems and developing creative solutions. The state was the third in the country to consolidate existing past programs into a unified major state agency to administer aggressive environmental and conservation efforts. Established by law on that initial Earth Day, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) immediatly began managing natural resources and solving pollution problems. For the past 36 years, New Jersey has been a pioneer in environmental protection. Since 1970, Earth Day has been celebrated annually on April 22nd in national and global proportions. It is promoted and supported at the state level by DEP, the New Jersey Commission on Environmental Education and Inter-agency Work Group, the Alliance for New Jersey Environmental Education, and a host of other environmental, educational, youth, and community-based organizations. Earth Day is celebrated in a variety of ways by schools, communities, parks and nature centers, organizations, companies, businesses, municipalities, families, volunteers, youth groups, and individuals. This year, many communities will showcase events and school and youth programs and engage citizens in weekend community service efforts, all designed to inform the public about their natural world.
EARTH DAY DECEPTION (www.earthsite.org) they changed their initial name Environmental teachIn to earth day and Environmental teach-In. It damages earth day when they call April 22 by http://www.earthsite.org/decept.htm
Extractions: It is well documented that John McConnell originated the name, idea and date of Earth Day. His purpose was to use the powerful imagery and history of the March Equinox as an annual event that would increase global commitment to the stewardship of earth. The first Earth Day was March 21, 1970 - celebrated with citywide participation in the City of San Francisco. While promoting environmental action, the April 22 organizers were politically motivated and devious in their methods. When they heard plans for Earth Day at the 1969 UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, they changed their initial name "Environmental Teach-In" to Earth Day and with their money and political clout got national attention for their competing April 22 Earth Day.

Extractions: Screw Earth Day! We need an Earth Century! by Robert T. Nanninga Billed as Earth Day, a teach-in, April 22 began the modern environmental movement. The summer of 1970 saw the US Congress enact the first Clean Air Act, and winter the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. 1970 also saw the formation of Natural Resources Defense Council, Friends of the Everglades, and the Lake Michigan Federation. In 1978, Congress passed the National Energy Act, which focused on energy conservation, and the Endangered American Wilderness Act. The Reagan Administration later gutted the National Energy Act of everything other than ethanol subsidies. In 1979, Earth First was created by Dave Foreman, and with it the birth of radical environmentalism. Theodore Roosevelt is rolling over in his staunchly republican grave. No ladies and gentlemen, an Earth Day once a year will not be enough to combat the evils being perpetuated by the Bush jihad. With the US federal government teetering on bankruptcy, it will take decades to restore the damage wrought by Bush, Inc. Somehow, we must jump-start the environmental revolution. Not only do we need to live Earth Day every day, as a species we need a century of profound ecological stewardship if we are to survive our darker nature. As someone who looks forward to April 22nd every year, and plans accordingly, I understand the importance of recognizing the anniversary of the first Earth Day. I also understand Earth Day is just a symbolic gesture aimed at raising global consciousness. In my book, Earth Day should be a national holiday, dedicated to environmental awareness. I also believe environmentalists need to get aggressive and stop being victims. Not even 70 days into the third Bush term and already the bulldozers are gunning for Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and California Clean Air and fuel efficiency standards.

Extractions: The first Earth Day in 1970 was organized by Wisconsin senator Gaylord Nelson who thought that, just as students had mobilized against the Vietnam War in the 1960's, they could also support a national day of rallies and teach-ins about the environment. He teamed up with Denis Hayes, a Harvard law student, and on April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was held. They chose Wednesday, April 22nd as the best day for college students. It was a beautiful spring day across the United States, and more than 20 million people took part in parades, marches, rallies, neighborhood clean-ups, tree plantings, and demonstrations against pollution. Folk singer Pete Seeger performed at the Washington Monument, and 42 states passed Earth Day resolutions. This was the largest organized demonstration in U.S. history. As a result, Congress passed the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act revisions, and the Environmental Protection Agency was created before year's end.

Increasing awareness about the use of grocery sacks?!? "Our school often contacts local grocery stores and has them donate grocery sacks to be decorated and then returned to the stores for use. The kids love going to the store and seeing their art work on bags being used. It's a good community P.R. thing too. It's free and easy. We really enjoy it." - Heather A similar activity is organized on a national level at http://www.earthdaybags.org . But it doesn't take nationwide organizing to do something like this at the local level. Simply contact a nearby grocery store and offer to have your students decorate a hundred or two paper bags with a simple Earth Day design. Then make a large poster to put up in the store to identify your class, and perhaps offer a small tabletop Earth Day display.
