Extractions: Earth Day was first observed on April 22, 1970. The goal of the day was to attract public attention to the growing needs for cleaner air and water. Additionally, the need to conserve the earth's natural resources was emphasized. Former Senator Gaylord Nelson first proposed the idea for Earth Day in 1969. He came up with the idea while reading about anti-war teach-ins which were occurring on several college campuses in the United States. Nelson's idea was to have a nationwide teach-in on the environment. His idea became very popular and in 1970, more than 20 million people participated in the first Earth Day. On the 25th anniversary of Earth Day in 1990, more than 200 million people worldwide participated in activities designed by the Earth Day Network to "increase awareness, responsibility and action toward a clean, health future for all living things."

Originally called "The First National Environmental Teach-in," Earth Day was modelled after the anti-Vietnam war teach-ins of the late 1960s. As former Senator Gaylord Nelson recalled in an October 1990 speech: "...[T]he idea for Earth Day occurred to me in late July 1969, while on a conservation speaking tour out West. At the time there was a great deal of turmoil on the college campuses over the Vietnam War. Protests, called anti-war teach-ins, were being widely held on campuses across the nation.. I read an article on the teach-ins, and it suddenly occurred to me, why not have a nationwide teach-in on the environment? "That was the origin of Earth Day." April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day, also marked the 100th Anniversary of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin's birth.

Former U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-WI), Earth Day's co-founder, said he modeled Earth Day on anti-Vietnam War demonstrations called "teach-ins" that then were common on college campuses: "I visited Santa Barbara in the summer of 1969 to speak at a water conference, and then flew north to Berkeley to speak at a conservation conference. On the plane I read an article about the use of campus anti-war teach-ins to educate students about the Vietnam War. Suddenly the idea occurred to me: Why not devote a day to a nationwide teach-in on the environment? Thus was born Earth Day. Eight months later, on April 22, 1970, 20 million people, 2,000 colleges and universities, 10,000 grammar and high schools and 1,000 communities mobilized for the first nationwide demonstrations on environmental problems. Congress adjourned for the day so members could attend Earth Day events in their districts. The response was nothing short of remarkable, and the modern American environmental movement took off. My major objective in planning Earth Day 1970 was to organize a nationwide public demonstration so large it would, finally, get the attention of the politicians and force the environmental issue into the political dialogue of the nation. It worked. By the sheer force of its collective action on that one day, the American public forever changed the political landscape respecting environmental issues."

Earth Day festivities include entertainment, speeches, tree plantings and litter cleanup. This year there also will be rallies about global warming, logging, preserving wilderness, saving the whales and protests against the war in Iraq. It's also time for some reflection, especially since I was one of the culprits who made the first Earth Day happen. I suppose we need an Earth Day to honor the importance of nature in our lives. But in keeping with the original spirit of Earth Day, in 2003 it's high time for ecologists to do some reflection, because the "environmental movement" today has become as much a problem as a solution. The inciting incident for Earth Day 1970 was an oil spill in Santa Barbara, Calif., in l969. It was not that large a spill. I grew up on an island in Lake Erie downstream from Detroit, where oil spills killed thousands of ducks every year in the Detroit River and Lake Erie.

For several years, it had been troubling me that the state of our environment was simply a non-issue in the politics of the country. Finally, in November 1962, an idea occurred to me that was, I thought, a virtual cinch to put the environment into the political "limelight" once and for all. The idea was to persuade President Kennedy to give visibility to this issue by going on a national conservation tour. I flew to Washington to discuss the proposal with Attorney General Robert Kennedy, who liked the idea. So did the President. The President began his five-day, eleven-state conservation tour in September 1963. For many reasons the tour did not succeed in putting the issue onto the national political agenda. However, it was the germ of the idea that ultimately flowered into Earth Day. I continued to speak on environmental issues to a variety of audiences in some twenty-five states. All across the country, evidence of environmental degradation was appearing everywhere, and everyone noticed except the political establishment. The environmental issue simply was not to be found on the nation's political agenda. The people were concerned, but the politicians were not.

His wife was with him," Christofferson said. Thirty-five years after the first Earth Day, April 22 is still a day on which many people plant trees, clean up trash and lobby for a clean environment. A conservationist years before it became fashionable, Nelson was recognized as one of the world's foremost environmental leaders. Then-President Clinton presented Nelson with a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995 for his environmental efforts. My key solution was to focus attention on the most important common ground and the positive values shared by adversaries. National holidays, as well as religious ones, have special days set: a good example of people coming together to peacefully celebrate. And so I, John McConnell, drew attention to a time that is celebrated by the entire world THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING: Nature's moment of the Equinox when the Sun crosses the celestial equator causing the length of day and night to be equal a state of equilibrium throughout the Earth. This is the true EARTH DAY, not because I selected it, but because it originates in the Earth's own rotation and revolution. The first day of Spring, a day that historically has been celebrated by people of every creed and culture is a day worthy of being a holiday of all of Earth's people. The first EARTH DAY, celebrated in the United States, was on March 21, 1970. It has been celebrated each year thereafter at the United Nations, bringing attention to its original purpose: peace, justice and the care of Earth.

In despair over the Republican victories in the November election and riven by internal tensions, activists are certain of neither their strategies nor their audience. What are environmentalism's major growing pains, and how can its troops avoid committing movement suicide? The first Earth Day in 1970 didn't necessarily constitute the "birth of the modern environmental movement," as Earth Day Network, an awareness-promoting group, likes to claim . When the inaugural event took place, many key laws, like the National Environmental Policy Act , had already been passed. Still, the national teach-in that took place on April 22, 1970, drew 20 million Americans into the parks and streets. The action that day helped kick off a decade in which Congress established the Environmental Protection Agency and, along with the states, passed wide-ranging environmental and public-health legislation. In the 1980s, Earth Day largely languished. Then the celebration ramped up again, at least for milestone anniversaries, with cleanups and rallies that captured the spirit of an earlier era. Earth Day 1990 events drew an estimated 100 million people around the world. Leonardo DiCaprio chaired the 2000 celebration, hosting a celebrity

Nelson was troubled that the state of our environment was not an issue in the politics of our country. As Nelson read about the teach-ins on college campuses to protest the Vietnam War, he wondered if a national teach-in on the environment would be an effective way to heighten awareness. On April 22, 1970, an estimated 20 million people participated in peaceful demonstration. Nelson achieved his goal. The nationwide demonstration was so large that it forced the environment to permanently be placed on the national political agenda.

Sometimes Earth Day Fairs are held to educate the public on environmental issues, pollution control, recycling programs, and conservation. Earth Day started as two separate events. In 1969, John McConnell, President of the Earth Society proposed to the City of San Francisco that they host a celebration of global unity, and stewardship. The day chosen for the first Earth Day celebration was the vernal equinox, March 21, 1970. Simultaneously in 1969, Dennis Hayes, and Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed a national one-day teach-in to educate the US public on environmental issues. This Earth Day celebration was held on April 22, 1970. Twenty million people participated. Today, April 22 is the officially accepted date for Earth Day celebrations. The Earth Day observance quickly spread from the US into Canada. Fossil fuels still produce most of our energy. Coal is still used to generate 55 percent of our electricity. Toxic wastes fill our oceans and protective legislation is slow and lacks enforcement. What happened to the grand expectations we had at the first Earth Day, 30 years ago? The first Earth Day in 1970 saw an estimated 20 million people across the nation participating in peaceful demonstrations that called attention to our environmental dilemmas. Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson organized it as a nationwide teach-in about the environment. Over 10,000 grade schools, 2,000 colleges, and 1,000 communities participated, sending a strong message to political leaders that the environment was part of everyone's lives and needed attention. The message was heard, and in the next few years sweeping environmental legislation was enacted including the Endangered Species Act, The Federal Clean Air Act, the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, the Toxic Substances Control Act, and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. It was a powerful time of reawakening, and it appeared, for a while, that the sobering realization of our impact on the natural world might result in positive change. Species were saved, habitats protected, and development projects were stopped. In New York City, over 100,000 people attended an ecology fair in Central Park. Congress adjourned for the day and over five hundred of its members attended teach-ins at universities or made speeches about saving the environment.
