The amount and influence of violence on television has long been the topic of study and national debate. For close to 30 years, dating from the 1960s to the Surgeon General's report in 1972, the National Institute of Mental Health report in 1982, and the American Psychological Association's report in 1992, more than 1,000 scientific studies have validated the premise that TV violence influences aggressive behavior in some children. In 1993, however, public concern over TV violence became so politicized that it extended to Congress, where Sen. Paul Simon issued a threat to the television industry to "control and regulate the amount of violence" in its programming or Congress would make it their business. In response, the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) funded a $3.5 million, three-year research study. Four prominent universities were selected to assess the naturenot just the numberof violent scenes across the vast TV landscape. Reports would be issued yearly and forwarded to Congress. The academic foundation for the study had been laid by prior research showing the harmful effects of TV programming were threefold: Viewers could learn aggressive attitudes and behavior from watching violence, become desensitized to the seriousness of violence, and become frightened of becoming a victim of real-life violence.

Extractions: Acknowledgments The primary providers of prevention and protection, the public health agencies, have a great deal to offer the nation as we seek to improve the quality and cut the cost of health care. Use of the Model Standards , the Assessment Protocol for Excellence in Health (APEX PH ) and the Planned Approach to Community Health (PATCH) can enable local and state health agencies to involve the communities they serve in their efforts while reasserting the importance of public health's assessment, policy development and assurance functions. Use of Healthy Communities 2000: Model Standards throughout the nation's 30,000 communities and approximately 3,000 local health agencies is vital if we are to achieve a substantial measure of the Healthy People 2000 objectives. But without the cooperation of the community and its major institutions, such progress is unlikely. Support from a community's leadership, its civic and religious organizations, its businesses and employees, its media, and others all can be crucial in directing the attention of citizens to the health needs of the community, and the role of public health, and in gaining their commitment to work cooperatively with the health agency. Every health agency can use Community Strategies for Health both to distribute to community leaders - particularly within the areas outlined in this guide - and to train its staff in the range of activities and approaches available for involving the community.

In FY 2001, after fifteen years of severe under funding, Congress, through the newly created Conservation Spending Category or "CARA-lite," approved an increase in funding for the State Historic Preservation Offices and Tribes. Decreased funding in FY 2002 and further cuts proposed in the Senate appropriation bill for FY 2003 will erase these gains.

Extractions: Excerpt from choral-announce The piece of music by Dr Christopher Tye, which eventually became the ditty we know as "Laudate", was composed 450 years ago (give or take a month), so I've taken the opportunity of making a new version. In fact, I've made several "new" versions, as explained at the following web page, being hosted courtesy of Karl Aloritias: http://www.arach.net.au/~algernon/laudate/history.html (N.B. Acrobat Reader required for musical examples) As the "traditional" AICSA Laudate has been simplified from what Tye wrote, my own new edition takes some liberties, such as giving back the altos something of a melody at the end (a radical idea there ;) and changing some of the less sensible word underlay (which is a later addition anyway). It is offered for free, for comment, and if anyone wants to sing that version instead of the "trad" one they're welcome to. I notice that Karl is doing a lot of work on songbook material for Perth IV some of which is duplicating stuff which has already been done by numerous people for IV's past is there any hope of making this sort of society task a more unified effort? Perhaps a solution might be a [choral-editors] mailing list (or possibly a Yahoo group, or summat) to request music to be edited, and delegate the editing...
