"Do you see that theorem?" the narrator asks. "In 1637, Pierre de Fermat . . . wrote it down in the margin of a book. Then he added this tantalizing note." A spotlight suddenly reveals a bearded, bewigged, flashily dressed Fermat, who promptly sings, "I have discovered a truly marvelous proof, a truly marvelous proof of this, which this margin is not large enough to contain." FERMAT SINGS. This musical fantasy was inspired by Princeton mathematician Andrew Wiles' 7-year quest to prove Fermat's last theorem.

Extractions: More Quick Links Annual Report Chapter Search Member Directory Sponsoring Vendors A Matter of Ethics RATIONALE The Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) is spearheading this national ethics project in an effort to unite member societies to further one of our most important common goals: To lend support and encouragement to promising young adults as they strive to meet their full potential as future leaders in their respective fields. Such potential is found not on the surface of a person, where the worthy goals of achievement and knowledge shine brightly for all to see. Instead, a person's full potential can only be reached by building upon the core of one's character, by encouraging honesty, trustworthiness, integrity... ethics. Because these issues cross all academic lines, you can exercise your creativity to promote the project across professional boundaries. We hope you'll take advantage of this unique opportunity to collaborate with your ACHS honor society peers. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES FOR PARTICIPATING HONOR SOCIETIES 1. Commit to a leadership role in increasing campus and community awareness of ethical standards.

Of particular interest here is the account of the influential work undertaken in 'special areas' (mining areas where there was high unemployment). It also provides us with a brief overview of the Association itself. The Educational Settlements Association (founded in 1920) consisted of 29 settlements and seven residential colleges at the time of this publication (they are listed in the appendix). Most of the settlements in membership were non-residential.
