CFN - SICADA Operation Software in order to enable the various operating systems (MS/dos, UNIX, VMS, OS/9, etc . oper the main operation programme. It can control the attached data http://oldwww.cfn.ist.utl.pt/sicada/sicada_softw.htm
Extractions: SICADA The ISTTOK computer systems are miscellaneous, so standardised communication protocols as TCP/IP, UDP, IPX/SPX, RPC/XDR and NFS were adopted, in order to enable the various operating systems (MS/DOS, UNIX, VMS, OS/9, etc.) to communicate with each other and to a common database. Most of the software made by the SICADA team was developed in C language, and it is running on MS-DOS/Windows/Unix and OS/9, depending on the host hardware. The ISTTOK database (ISTOKDB) contains the parameters and data of each plasma discharge. It resides on database server connected to the Ethernet network by IPX/SPX and TCP/IP, so it can be accessed by all the existing computers in CFN. It is composed mainly by files in DBASE format (extended to allow manipulation of binary data). This format has been chosen because it is readable by most of the application software commercially available for MS/DOS/WINDOWS, which are the most used operating environments for data processing in CFN. The data is organised in the following levels: ShotID: It is composed by a single table in which each record retains the general information / identification of one particular shot: date, hour, persons responsible, several system flags, etc.

Extractions: Seybold Report on Desktop Publishing Vol 8, No 12 Microsoft told to end monopolistic practices Long-suffering software vendors that had hoped that the Federal Trade Commission would save them from the Microsoft juggernaut will have to look elsewhere for salvation. On July 15, the U.S. Justice Department filed a civil suit charging that the company used unfair contracts that choked off competition and preserved its monopoly position. At the same time, Microsoft signed a consent decree that, if approved by the court, will settle the suit. In the decree Microsoft agrees to change some of its practices in licensing its operating systems to hardware vendors. In return, Justice and the European Commission have agreed not to go to court. History. Justice focus: OEM licensing. The FTC eventually deadlocked on the investigation and, last December, dropped it altogether. Justice then picked it up and soon began cooperating with the competition enforce- ment arm of the European Commission. Under the terms of the consent decree agreed to by Microsoft and Justice, Microsoft will have to end some of the heavy-handed pricing tactics with which it has twisted the arms of its OEMs in the past. No longer will it:

File Management Computer file management systems can be classified by the type of file file length (usually 8 characters still present in dos and Windows 3.1 today). http://ei.cs.vt.edu/~netinfo/backupcs1604/ostypes.html
Extractions: Introduction to the Internet Computer Science 1604 Background Gen Apps Oper Sys Word Proc Text Files Graphic Files Computer file management systems can be classified by the type of file organization they provide ( Flat File or Hierarchical File Systems); and the type of user interface they present ( Character/Command or Graphical/Event Driven). These file organizations and interfaces greatly affect how users manipulate and interact with their information. Early computer file management systems ( MSDOS 1.0 IBM CMS , etc.) only allow a linear list of the files. In order to group related files, users were forced to name the related files very similar, usually varying only the last 1 or 2 characters of the name or the type (extension) of the file. To be fair CMS also allows a user to maintain several ' virtual ' disks which do provide a minimal level of hierarchical organization. A contributing limiting factor in these file systems was the restriction on the name of the file length (usually 8 characters still present in DOS and Windows 3.1 today). This serious drawback often requires the use of cryptic file names, where in the worst case each character is a code with a specific meaning. Fortunately these systems have declined in use due to the popularity of hierarchical file systems. Hierarchical file systems ( MSDOS UNIX , etc.

Bokler's Guide To "CRACKER" Software How well do the systems and software you use protect your data? See the oper.systems section. The Nomad Mobile Research Centre has FAQs and files for http://www.bokler.com/crak_body.html
Extractions: How well do the systems and software you use protect your data? The level of security provided by much of the software in common use today is very weak. This page illustrates the risks of entrusting your data to software or systems which are cryptographically weak or logically flawed. The "cracker software" listed on this page exploits these weaknesses. The intent is not to low-rate anyone's products; the objectives are to: provide a few datapoints on cryptographic strength, help assess risk exposure in your environment, and help developers avoid common mistakes in new implementations. The latest "Zip Cracker"from AccessData Corp. makes your data available to anyone with $59.00.
Installing NetWare Connectivity The computer runs MSdos 5.0 and the NetWare Connectivity disks do not contain if you want to install Windows oper ating system support, choose Cancel. http://docs.hp.com/en/J2716-90008/ch02s01.html
Extractions: NetWare Connectivity Guide Chapter 2. Installing and Configuring NetWare Connectivity Complete book in PDF Feedback You must install LAN Manager on a workstation before you can install NetWare Connectivity. When you install NetWare Connectivity on the first workstation on your network, you must install it directly from the NetWare Connectivity distribution disk. Then you can install NetWare Connectivity on other workstations either directly from the distribution disk or over the network from a source directory on a server. If you are installing NetWare Connectivity on several workstations, installing over the network can save you time. You can copy the NDIS-compliant IPX.COM file you generate when you install the first workstation into the network directory you are using for installation. This way, you do not have to regenerate IPX.COM every time you install NetWare Connectivity on another workstation. For more information, see "Installing Over the Network," later in this chapter. Another installation method is to use an altered version of the NetWare Connectivity distribution disk. This method is not as fast as over-the- network installation, but it does not require you to prepare a server.
History Of Ghostscript Versions 1.n Changes the compilation rules for Unix systems to not use the o and -c compiler Moves the -1 flag for the MS-dos compiler from the cc*.bat files to the http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/doc/cvs/History1.htm
Extractions: For other information, see the Ghostscript overview This release should have had a lot more things in it, but time pressure and the already long delay in getting it out made it necessary to push it out the door in an incomplete state (e.g., no testing on X systems whatsoever). Makes undefined characters in the standard font display as tilde rather than blank (or causing an error). Unmapped character codes (those mapped to .notdef in the encoding) still display as nothing, per the PostScript manual. Version 1.2 (2/22/89)
