Extractions: whales Cetaceans - the biological order to which whales, dolphins and porpoises belong - appear on many ancient wall paintings, pottery, coins, jewellery etc. In fact, these marine mammals have been a part of Greek civilisation for over three and a half thousand years and the science of cetology was indeed founded by the ancient Greeks. The first scientific report on dolphins and whales is Historia Animalium written by Aristotle, and dates back to 350 BCE. A yachting holiday is the best way to encounter dolphins and whales. Sailing the Greek waters enables you to study at least eight of the most interesting species of marine mammals up close and perhaps a few more if the conditions are right. To correctly identify the four most commonly sighted dolphins, as well as the four most commonly sighted whales, their characteristics are outlined below. An Identification Guide as well as a Test Your Knowledge quiz can be found towards the end of this page. The Striped dolphin ( Stenella coeruleoalba ) is named after its dark bluish-black stripe running across the entire length of the body. In the east Mediterranean the Striped dolphin is the most common and most sighted dolphin and here they seem to prey primarily on cephalopods
Extractions: The dolphins swam in a tight, defensive circle A group of swimmers has told how a pod of dolphins protected them from a great white shark off New Zealand's coast. The lifeguards were training at a beach near Whangarei on the North Island when they were menaced by a 3-metre shark, before the dolphins raced in to help. The swimmers were surrounded by the dolphins for 40 minutes before they were able to make it safely back to the beach. Marine biologists say such altruistic behaviour is not uncommon in dolphins. Lifeguard Rob Howes was in the water with two colleagues and his teenage daughter. It was an uncomfortable experience, as they were circled by a great white shark, which came within a couple of metres. He said around half a dozen dolphins suddenly appeared and herded the swimmers together. The mammals swam in tight circles to create a defensive barrier as the great white lurked under the surface.

Extractions: Game observations It's pretty obvious by now that the biggest reason the Dolphins lost to the New York Jets was the offense's inability to produce, along with 10 penalties that kept Jets drive alives and too often put the Dolphins in a bad spot. But there also were developments, both good and bad, that weren't quite so apparent.

Extractions: Why To Watch The Panthers are flying high after Week 2's upset victory over defending Super Bowl champion New England. Defense has been Carolina's catalyst for success in recent years, but the Panthers now have a healthy Stephen Davis and an efficient all-around offense led by quarterback Jake Delhomme. The Dolphins believe they have the answer with their new-look defense, led by holdovers Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas and anchored by a group of veteran linemen brought in to help run coach Nick Saban's 4-3/3-4 hybrid scheme. They have played much better than expected. But quarterback Gus Frerotte must get offensive production against a solid all-around defense to make a game of it.
