Extractions: Updated June 28, 2001, 10:00 a.m. ET Federal appeals court reverses breakup of Microsoft A federal appeals court reversed the breakup of Microsoft Thursday and ordered that a new judge decide the landmark case. It was a major victory for the embattled software maker. The appeals court ruled that U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson improperly conducted himself in the case, leaving himself open to the appearance he was biased against Microsoft. "We vacate the judgment on remedies, because the trial judge engaged in impermissible ex parte contacts by holding secret interviews with members of the media and made numerous offensive comments about Microsoft officials in public statements outside of the courtroom, giving rise to an appearance of partiality," the court said. "Although we find no evidence of actual bias, we hold that the actions of the trial judge seriously tainted the proceedings before the District Court and called into question the integrity of the judicial process," the court added. The ruling was unanimous, by a 7-0 vote.

Extractions: What's this? We know that 78 percent of Americans, including members of Congress, are unaware that residents of the District of Columbia are denied full congressional voting representation. We also know that in order for this injustice to be addressed by Congress, DC Vote's message needs to be heard - both inside the District of Columbia and across the country. Many people living in Washington, DC, move here from other areas of the country where people don't know about DC's denial of democracy. You can be an important part of DC Vote's efforts to educate people around the country. One of the best ways you can help raise awareness of DC's plight is to write a letter-to-the-editor of your hometown, local and national newspapers; magazines; high school or college alumni newsletters; organizational newsletters; community newsletters; e-mail lists; or other publications. (Be as creative as you can be about where you send letters!) Below are some informational bullet points you may use to personalize your letters and some hints about writing letters-to-the-editor . Extractions: Cable Wireless Telecommunications We have represented the telecommunications industry in a series of groundbreaking litigation projects covering the waterfront of issues that are crucial to the wireless telecommunications industry. Our work has included defending and challenging orders of the Federal Communications Commission before federal appellate courts and defending statutory challenges to legislation in trial-level federal courts. We have focused, in particular, on appellate challenges to FCC efforts to increase competition in wireless telecommunications markets. We represented the wireless industry in the appeal of the implementation of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, winning our portion of the all-industry challenge in the federal appeals courts and preserving that victory in the U.S. Supreme Court. We represented telecommunications entrepreneurs in successfully supporting the FCC's implementation of spectrum auctions before the U.S. Court of Appeal for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Extractions: The Internet can be a great source for finding out about current events. Many newspapers, magazines, television stations and news agencies have web sites with up to the hour - or even up to the minute - news and feature stories. Unfortunately, the content changes so quickly on these web sites that Internet search engines do not even try to search news sites for individual stories. Searchers must use specialized search tools to find current news information. Search tools include news directories, news search engines, and databases. Web pages set up by individual newspapers, television stations and other news agencies. A news site may also be an aggregator - a web page that gathers articles from a variety of other news sites.
