"Think small" was the phrase that appeared in magazines - and this at a time when many American luxury sedans were twelve feet long. The number of choices for students and parents is growing. In the United States, 500,000 children attend 3,000 charter schools, and more than a million are home-schooled. Voucher or tax-deduction programs exist in twelve states and the District of Columbia. Nationally, there are 25,000 private schools in the U.S. serving 5 million students. These are large numbers, but the trend is toward smaller, more personal schools. Indian Springs School has a special part to play in independent education. We are the only independent, non-public, non-military, non-religious boarding school in Alabama and Mississippi. And with 268 students in grades eight through twelve, we are small. Moreover, Indian Springs is the first boarding school in America to be recognized by the Malone Family Foundation with a $2-million grant to underwrite tuition and other expenses for bright students whose families could not otherwise afford an independent school.

William David Tranbarger and Nova Smith Tranbarger, were both enrolled in the high school division. Russell and his sister, Judy Tranbarger Bible, who was too young to attend the academy when the family lived in the front apartment of the old administration building, visited the campus this past summer. Russell Tranbarger and Judy Tranbarger Bible stand in front of a picture of their father and mother, who both graduated from the academy in the Class of 1948. The Tranbarger boys apparently had some time on their hands occasionally when they were young students here. Russell recalls the day the smell of peanut butter got the best of them and they sneaked into the school store, took a supply of peanut butter and crackers (which were manufactured on campus under the supervision of Mrs. William Hall), and took their treasure to the old swimming pool to eat. Unfortunately for them, Mr. York Stewart was watching from his dorm window. Mr. Stewart gave them a whipping, then summoned their mother, who whipped them again. When their father got home they got their third whipping in one day.

Extractions: So Your Kid is An Aspiring Artiste? For any parent overseas, distance can make it difficult to find the right American school for a child. For those whose kids seem destined for the performing arts, the task is doubly hard: Auditions and school visits can be impossible to arrange. To ease this task, FSJ has researched some highly regarded performing arts schools public and private that you may want to consider. That's not to say that a youngster with a strong desire to play music, sing, act or dance necessarily needs a specialized school. For example, Katie Buck, who grew up in the Foreign Service and who graduated in 1999 as a theater major from Wesleyan University, attended Sidwell Friends School, a highly regarded, and nonspecialized, private secondary school. Buck says, "I don't at all regret going to that school, though I wish I'd taken more acting classes. But at that point I wasn't sure I wanted to narrow myself to the arts." Last year, Buck presented her one-woman play, "I-Site," based on growing up as a "third-culture kid," to the Foreign Service Youth Foundation. She is now living in New York City and working in theater and television. Arguing in favor of a specialized arts school, however, is the limited arts programing that many public schools have nowadays. "When it comes to budget, arts programs are the first to be cut," notes John Mahlmann, executive director of the Music Educators National Conference.
