NCQ technology enables the hard drive to intelligently reorder and optimize both read and write command execution, improving the performance of queued workloads by minimizing mechanical positioning latencies on the drive. NCQ is a command protocol in Serial ATA that can only be implemented on native Serial ATA hard drives. It allows multiple commands to be outstanding within a drive at the same time. Drives that support NCQ have an internal queue where outstanding commands can be dynamically rescheduled or re-ordered, along with the necessary tracking mechanisms for outstanding and completed portions of the workload. NCQ also has a mechanism that allows the host to issue additional commands to the drive while the drive is seeking for data for another command. NCQ also allows the drive to set up the direct memory access (DMA) operation for a data transfer without host software intervention. This is also called first party DMA - it means that the device is capable of complex sequences of operations without CPU intervention. The drive itself knows the current angular and rotational position of the drive head. The drive then selects the next data transfer to minimize both seek and rotational latencies.

Extractions: Behind Seagate Technology's announcement Monday of 12 new disk drives is a strategy to address applications ranging from the portable consumer market to enterprise servers and corporate data centers. "We're the only company that has the breath of coverage in all these markets," said Jennifer Bradfield, Seagate's director of product marketing for personal and notebook storage. She sees different drives being used in different new applications and in the process enabling Seagate to address 97 percent of a total available disk drive market. Before the announcement, the marketing exec said, the firm addressed just 70 percent of the available disk drive market representing some $16 billion. At 97 percent, the market represents $21 billion. At the top of the new applications is a half-terabyte drive the NL35 Series 500-Gbyte Fibre Channel that delivers near-line storage on existing Fibre Channel SANs. Bradfield noted the increase in demand for near-line storage users need access to vast amounts of data. "But they only need it occasionally and when they do they need it fast," she said. "Medical records are a perfect example here." Near-line storage needs are increasing due to a broad array of new demands regulatory compliance requirements are growing because of new laws like the Sarbanes-Oxley requirements that require improved record keeping. New versions of the firm's established Cheetah family also address enterprise backup and recovery applications. The Cheetah 15K.4 disk drive has a Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface and with capacities of 36, 73, and 147 GBs also features what Seagate calls the industry's first 15K-rpm drive with a Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) rating of 1.4 million hours.

File Storage Hardware and Disk Organization FILE STORAGE HARDWARE AND DISK ORGANIZATION This chapter covers information about Hard Disk Drives (HDD) and low-level disk organization. Topics covered are: Hard Disk Drive Basics A hard disk is a sealed unit containing a number of platters in a stack. Hard disks may be mounted in a horizontal or a vertical position. In this description, the hard drive is mounted horizontally. Electromagnetic read/write heads are positioned above and below each platter. As the platters spin, the drive heads move in toward the center surface and out toward the edge. In this way, the drive heads can reach the entire surface of each platter. On a hard disk, data is stored in thin, concentric bands. A drive head, while in one position can read or write a circular ring, or band called a track. There can be more than a thousand tracks on a 3.5-inch hard disk. Sections within each track are called sectors. A sector is the smallest physical storage unit on a disk, and is almost always 512 bytes (0.5 kB) in size. The figure below shows a hard disk with two platters.

There is just simply too much to know to be proficient at everything related to IT. So, if you need a little help making a hardware buying decision, or just want to know more about how it works "under the hood", you've come to the right place. Resource Sites: DiskTrend.com Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 98080 - Windows NT can take advantage of hard drives with more than 1024 cylinders if your computer hardware permits. While Windows NT does not have an internal limit to the number of cylinders it can address, there are some hardware configurations where Windows NT must contend with a 10 bit (1024 cylinder) limitation, imposed by the supporting hardware (the hard drive controller or system BIOS in most cases). This article describes how the ATDISK driver determines drive geometry. Other hard disk drivers are not included here, as the 1024 cylinder limitation usually doesn't apply. The other drivers, including SCSI disk drivers, use absolute block addressing.

Hardware FAQ Solution #18, Hard Disk Drives (last modified 04/20/2004): Isn't it amazing how the fastest of computer workstations can be made to appear slow through the inappropriate configuration of its hard disk drive storage system? While computers have increased in performance by a factor of 2000 in the past twenty years and hard disk drives have increased in capacity by at least a factor of 10,000, the "average seek time" of hard disk drives has really only improved by a factor of 10. It is this "average seek time"-the speed at which a hard disk drive get actually get TO the data on a disk platter that is one of the major limitations on the performance of an IC Player. When planning the layout of files and partitions on are hard disk the goal is to minimize the overall time the drive will spend getting to the data it needs to retrieve. The following techniques can prove useful: In a single logical volume disk system,(such as ONE Hard Disk Drive or ONE RAID-1 or RAID- 5 HD set), separate files that change frequently from files at almost never change. The means that if a given player is going to receive frequent updates of artwork; place these frequently changing files on a disk partition of their own.

(From the 1981 edition of the " DECsystem-10 Technical Summary The disk subsystems provide high performance and reliability. Disk features include accurate server positioning, error correction, and offset positioning recovery. Table 7-1 summarizes the capactities and speeds of the disk devices. To support the performance and reliability features of the system's disk devices, the operating system's disk device drivers provide comprehensive error recovery algorithms (for example, ECC and offset recovery for disk) and log all device errors. Disk controllers allow several drives to preforma simultaneous seek operations. Since the controller is not busy during seek operations, data transfers on one drive can overlap seeks in progress on other drives. If more than one drive is on the same controller, overlapped seeks will accelerate processing for the disks on that controller. Overlapped seeks increase throughput by decreasing the effective access time. Table 7-1

Instead of using one or the other for backup, this tip suggests using disk and tape together. Read about strategies for using hybrid, disk-to-tape backups. (March 18, 2003) This Aberdeen InSight examines disk storage and storage area network (SAN) trends. SAN capacities are increasing as high-capacity disk drives are decreasing in price. But access density, locality and cache memory algorithms in your SAN design could determine if small, fast disks win the day. (Aug. 29, 2002)
