Extractions: Major Resource Kit English Facility in the use of one's language is valuable in many careers and in daily interaction. Studying the literature of one's culture develops this facility through exposure to different verbal styles, practice in oral and written critical analysis and acquaintances with the major themes of human experience. The Department of English seeks to improve the use of language among students at the University. Freshman classes are limited to 22 students so that students can receive close, personal attention from their instructors; the average size of upper-level classes is 25 students. Students choosing to major in English study a curriculum of British, American and/or comparative literature; they may also specialize in journalism, film, business-technical writing, English-education, or ethnic studies. Courses in creative writing are regularly offered, and the department participates in an interdisciplinary minor in Irish studies. Approximately 25 percent of students majoring in English go on to graduate study in fields such as law, library science, literature or journalism. The skills that many English majors develop in articulation, written communication and analysis are valued by employers in banking, sales, insurance, lobbying, labor relations and social service fields. There are also job opportunities in journalism, publishing and editing, technical writing, advertising, teaching and public relations. For further information on English majors, students should contact Dr. Stephen Bernhardt, 212 Memorial Hall, or call 831-2362.

That's what elementary school students from Wilmington, Newark, Middletown and Dover will discover this spring, as they compete in the "Kids for a Greener Delaware" contest announced by Gov. Thomas R. Carper last September. Sponsored by the Department of Education and the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, the contest will award cash prizes to the first, second and third-place schools that collect the most recyclables from January through May 2001. The Delaware Solid Waste Authority will provide all 'RECYCLE DELAWARE' containers and maintain each center throughout the year. "This is an excellent opportunity to educate our students on the importance and value of resource conservation," said Governor Carper. "Our elementary students will learn first-hand an economic and environmental lesson in recycling that can only enhance their knowledge and awareness of the amount of material discarded in our throw-away society. Learning to reuse and recycle is an investment in their future." Bancroft Academy and Brandywine Springs Elementary in Wilmington, Gallagher Elementary and Forest Oak Elementary in Newark, Reading Intermediate School in Middletown, and Booker T. Washington and Towne Point Elementary in Dover provided space for 'RECYCLE DELAWARE' centers at their schools and agreed to maintain them for two years.
