The following compilation of Internet/WWW sites is intended to be an introductory guide to some of the map and reference resources available via the World Wide Web. Consider using one of the WWW search engines if you are looking for a specific type of map or reference. The maps which are listed here have been selected because they are thought to be reasonably useful and/or interesting. They are categorized by geographical region although there are a couple of thematic categories such as Interactive Maps which both highlights the potential of the WWW and are also fun to use. Note that there is some overlap in geographic coverage between these categories. The emphasis is on displayable maps (e.g. images) rather than digital cartographic (GIS) and satellite data which can be found in the separate compilation Geodata Information Sources . There is also another listing which includes Weather Maps and Imagery This list has been compiled for use by faculty members and students of the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research . Extractions: Ask the students to recall that the first settlers traveled on ships to reach the New World and formed colonies along the east coast of what is now the United States. Remind the students that the Atlantic coast also had many bays which made it easy for ships to come close to shore. Ask: What is the definition of a bay? (An inlet of the ocean partly surrounded by land.) Give a map of the New England and Middle Atlantic Colonies to each student. Ask students to name all the colonial cities located on the Atlantic Ocean or a bay (Boston, MA; Plymouth, MA; Baltimore, MD; Williamsburg, VA; Jamestown, VA). Write the name of the city and the colony on the board as students name them. Remind the students that these cities were important in the development of trade because of their closeness to the ocean.

Extractions: The following document is extracted from Fire Insurance Maps in the Library of Congress: A checklist compiled by the Reference and Bibliography Section, Geography and Map Division. The Preface contains general information on LC's collection and includes a list of other libraries with Sanborn holdings. The Introduction by Walter W. Ristow give an excellent historical perspective on fire insurance maps and the Sanborn Company. Sample image from Preface The Earth Sciences and Map Library has a microfilmed set of the California Sanborn maps from this collection. Please see our online index for complete holdings information. Tracing the development and growth of cities and towns has been a popular study in recent years. Fortunately for the researcher on such a quest, the cartographic collections of the Library of Congress contain thousands of maps and atlases of urban areas, dating from as far back as the sixteenth century up to the present. Of particular note among the Library's holdings is an extensive collection of maps of American cities and towns, giving detailed, accurate information about their buildings and other structures. The Sanborn Map Company of Pelham, New York, produced many such maps. The Sanborn map collection consists of a uniform series of large-scale maps, dating from 1867 to the present and depicting the commercial, industrial, and residential sections of some twelve thousand cities and towns in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The maps were designed to assist fire insurance agents in determining the degree of hazard associated with a particular property and therefore show the size, shape, and construction of dwellings, commercial buildings, and factories as well as fire walls, locations of windows and doors, sprinkler systems, and types of roofs. The maps also indicate widths and names of streets, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. They show the locations of water mains, giving their dimensions, and of fire alarm boxes and hydrants. Sanborn maps are thus an unrivaled source of information about the structure and use of buildings in American cities.
