Extractions: At Appoquinimink, students, parents, educators and the community share a common vision about high achievement, a fact which has helped their students earn one of the best academic records in the state. The district's six schools earned a total of four Superior and two Commendable ratings from the Delaware Department of Education in the Fall of 2001. Considered a small to mid-size district, Appoquinimink is situated in the heart of the states fastest growing region for new home construction. Thanks to the passage of successful voter referendums in 1998 and 2000, the district has kept pace with the growth by remodeling and renovating every school in the system, including approving funding for the construction of two new elementary schools. The first new school, Olive B. Loss Elementary, opened in Fall 2002, followed by a second new elementary school, Brick Mill Elementary in Fall 2003. The district offers a traditional small-town atmosphere in a location that provides easy access to major business and entertainment centers. Residents are just 30 minutes from Delawares largest city (the corporate headquarters for Fortune 500 Companies DuPont, MBNA and AstraZeneca), one hour from the beach, and minutes from nationally recognized colleges and universities.

Extractions: and the Delaware Valley The extensive drainage basin of the Delaware River is popularly called the "Delaware Valley." In different parts of my life I've lived in each of the three states surrounding it Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. As a boy, I was always curious about the mysterious Indians who were nowhere to be seen, but whose language surrounded us in place names like Conestoga, Susquehanna, Passaic, and Hoboken, just to name a few. Even the name Manhattan comes from the language of the "Delaware" Indians. I am glad to have finally learned, much later in life, about the people who really "settled" this land and blazed its trails. Here in Pennsylvania, many early contacts were honorable, and Indians were well-treated. Unfortunately, much of that honor died with William Penn . The links below will shed light on the history and culture of this region's first inhabitants, and the activities of Indians who live here now.

Extractions: Id never even been in the States before this trip to Kansas. My friends back home had warned me that a young single woman with a name that sounds like horny would have trouble in this country. Rauni, they advised me with the best of intentions, why dont you just call yourself Ronda Thorn? That is not my name and that is certainly not the Thorni way. I was born into this world as Rauni Thorni. They are proud names. The name of a queen and of a heroe in the place I know best. I was not about to become somebody else merely to avoid a few smirks from strangers. The full moon had kept me company on the flight from Helsinki to Chicago. I was tired and feeling quite stressed as the chopper touched down. I was entering unknown territory. Kansas was the Ultima Thule on my mental map. But since I am the girl from Thule I suppose it would be more appropriate, despite the awful cliche, to say Kansas was as unfamiliar to me as Oz was to Dorothy. Not every Indian had a positive image of Lawrence or of Haskell. There was certainly strong opposition from various factions who thought their own corner of Indian Country, or even the nation's capital was more appropriate. But in the end it put things right in the middle of Turtle Island. From the Passamaquoddy people 'downeast' in Maine to the Chemehuevi of southern California, and from the Alaskan Aleuts a stones throw from Asia to the Seminoles in the Florida Everglades, Lawrence, Kansas means Haskell. Whether individuals view Haskell's history as merely flawed or thoroughly evil, almost everyone in Indian Country knows where the school is located. Everyone in Indian Country also knows that despite the past problems in this community, Lawrence has many elements that make it an ideal meeting ground for the tremendously diverse cultures that comprise Native North America.

A precursor to this activist resistance against oppression can be found in a more subtle expression in paintings that explore distinct and personal American Indian identity. This quiet resistance, which began decades before the street protests and social activism, is documented in the upcoming exhibit Beautiful Resistance: Works on Paper from the Heard Museum Collection.
