    Extractions: T his is a lively reel or jiglike dance of Britain that might possibly be a relic of an old pagan May Eve ceremony, still performed in some countries at Beltane (see Sabbats ) and midsummer festivals. The Morris dance is thought to have been named after moeisca , a Moorish dance or play which is solely performed by men, and is believed to bring good luck. Morris dancing dates back to the 15th century, and some theories place its origin in Britain in the 14th century. The dance is descended from an old Moorish dance, the fandango of Spain. Also, is might be associated with a secret Moroccan cult, the Dhulqarneni, or "The Two-Horned Ones," who danced in a circle to raise magic power and worshipped the moon. It is believed to have been introduced into Britain from Spain by John of Gaunt, son of Edward III (1312-1377), who spent considerable time in that country. According to anthropologist Margaret A. Murray, an old Morris dance tune, "Green Garters," was the traditional music for the processional dance to the Maypole on May morning. The May games and dances, which were the pagan festivals and fertility rites, were important to villages, especially in the 16th century, and were tolerated by the Church during the 17th century, but the Puritans abolished them. Morris dancing was restored during the Restoration.

    Extractions: We are Bristol's longest-established men's Morris Dance Side, founded in 1951. We perform Cotswold Morris Dances, (some more traditional than others!), to music provided by melodeon, concertina, fiddle or pipe and tabor. Our current active membership is around two dozen (including more than half-a-dozen youngsters, mainly children of adult members, who are our second generation!). We also have a cantankerous horse, called (funnily enough) Horse , who now has his own Web Page We are always delighted to welcome prospective new members, either dancers or musicians. No previous experience is necessary, but the best time for newcomers to investigate us, or start dancing is around October. This is because our practice season runs largely from the end of September to mid April. We dance throughout the year, but our busiest season for dancing out is between May and July. The official start of our dancing year is on May Day - May 1st - when we dance at sunrise, to the traditional audience of one passer-by and his (or her) dog Where can you find us?

In an empty upper room, he perches behind a desk, takes a drag on his cigarette, flicks aside tendrils of his long black hair with his fingers and says, "Shoot." In a flash, he jumps back up to open the window. "Can't smoke here," he quips, with an exaggerated grimace. "Wouldn't want to set off any alarms now, would we?" Ever since founding his own company, the Mark Morris Dance Group, in 1980, the 40-year-old choreographer has been setting off alarms all around the world with dances exploring an extraordinary range of subjects: lust and childhood fears, cowboys and Tamil Indians, the archetypal suffering and purgation of myth, heartaches and Gershwin. Long before multiculturalism became an aesthetic buzzword, Morris was merrily shoplifting moves from Spanish flamenco and Balkan, Israeli, Russian and Balinese folk dances. An inspired chameleon, Morris is as much at home clogging to Michelle Shocked's twangy country laments as he is with Handel's shimmering paean to the Enlightenment, "L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato."

    Extractions: In the Cotswold tradition (originating in central England) the dancers dress in colourful costumes. The most common combination is: a hat decorated with flowers, a white shirt covered by a tunic, white trousers, bells below the knees, and black shoes. Dances may involve handkerchieves, wooden sticks and hand clapping. In the Border tradition , dancers blacken their faces. This was originally done as a disguise - Olvier Cromwell banned morris dancing because it was a form of begging. The dancers wear mainly black top hats with pheasent feathers - making fun of the village Squire and the Gentry. Their coats have rags sewn to them because the poor farm labourers usually only owned one coat and could be easily recognised without the rags.

It is one of the four ancient Pagan Celtic Fire fire festivals which were adopted by the early Catholic church, and have now been re-appropriated by the modern Pagan movement. The day's entertainment will end with a simple ceremony to celebrate the occasion, performed by members of the Eastbourne Pagan Circle, which you are very welcome to join if you wish. We hope you will enjoy the music and dancing, and respect the right of Pagans to be open about their beliefs in public.
