    Extractions: Chris Witcombe Sweet Briar College witcombe@sbc.edu Morris Dancing Although the link between Druids and megalithic sites is tenuous at best, there seems to be no reason to doubt that both the celebration of ancient Celtic festivals and the rituals performed at stone circles and other megalithic sites included dancing in one form or another. Evidence for the latter is virtually non-existent, but folklore and other clues suggest, for example, that dance may have been performed at Stonehenge if only through the suggestive description by Geoffrey of Monmouth , writing in the 12th century, who calls Stonehenge the Dance of the Giants ( chorea gigantum ). Much later, Morris dancing used to take place around the ancient barrow at St. Weonards in Herefordshire. Morris dancing, in fact, has been claimed to be a remnant of a pre-Christian Celtic, or Druidic, fertility dance. Morris Dancers outside The Old Neighbourhood Inn, Chalford Hill, Gloucestershire, England Morris dancing also figures among the evidence in support of the claim that dancing formed part of the celebration of Celtic festivals. Among the earliest references to Morris dancing are those made by Shakespeare, who, in All's Well that Ends Well (II.ii.21), makes it clear that the Morris dance was commonly performed on May Day (May 1). That Morris dancing was associated with May Day celebrations in the early 17th century is also suggested through King James I's

His dancers, derided by some critics as "fat," have challenged the dance world's notions of the body. Still, Morris' reputation as the "bad boy" of modern dance has faded in recent years, amid accolades for Morris' "force of imagination" and ability to mix emotions. Born in 1956, Morris first studied dance in his hometown of Seattle, Washington. He developed an interest in a range of music and dance styles, including folk, classical ballet, and modern, which continue to influence his work. Morris moved from Seattle to New York in 1976, and his early career included performing with several groups, including the Koleda Balkan Dance Ensemble, the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, Hannah Kahn Dance Company, Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians, and the Eliot Feld Ballet. At the age of 24, Morris founded the Mark Morris Dance Group with friends and colleagues. The ensemble first performed in 1980 at New York City's Merce Cunningham Studio. Today, the Mark Morris Dance Group boasts a busy international touring schedule and is considered one of the world's leading dance companies. The Dance Group performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music for the first of 15 seasons in 1984, had its Kennedy Center debut in 1985 and premiered in Europe and on PBS in 1986. In 1988, Morris was named director of dance at Brussels' Theatre Royal de la Monnaie as the Dance Group was invited for a three-year stint as the national dance company of Belgium.

Morris Dancing's origins are lost in the mists of time, derived from the pan-European agrarian traditions of fertility celebrations at sowing and harvest-tide. Arbeau speaks of Morris dancing in Orchesography, "In fashionable Society when I was young, a small boy, his face daubed with black and his forehead swathed in a white or yellow handkerchief...wore leggings covered with little bells and performed a Morris....The ability to perform this dance well was held in high esteem." Shakespeare spoke of Morris dancing as an already ancient ritual, though it was still commonly practiced in his time. Other 16th century sources confirm that the dances were done by both men and women, and that they were a popular form of spectacle, a competitive sport of sorts.

She's talking about Mark Morris, who is creating a new dance this month at the center. Called ''Cargo," it's set to Darius Milhaud's ''La Creation du Monde." The Mark Morris Dance Group and the musicians of the TMC will premiere the piece at Tanglewood June 26 and 27. It's Morris's first TMC commission. But this is actually Morris's third season in residence at the center, where around 150 young composers, singers, instrumentalists, and conductors gather each summer to hone their crafts in the inspiring surroundings of the Boston Symphony Orchestra's summer home. ''That fact that [Morris] works in dance is almost irrelevant," Highstein says. ''It's the fact that he's a great musician that counts." Morris choreographs with the score in hand, and his rehearsals sometimes end with his dancers gathered around the piano for a song fest. Morris treats dancers' bodies as musical instruments.
