Breaking The Rules - Arts Extra - MSNBC.com The jazz dance World Congress convenes in Chicago next week anddon t laughit s worth checking out. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8744659/site/newsweek/
Extractions: WEB EXCLUSIVE By By Karen Springen Newsweek Joffrey Ballet dancers typically wear tights, tutus and pointe shoes. But on a Chicago stage next week, they will be dressed in sweatshirts and sneakers for a sultry pas de deux by "West Side Story" choreographer Jerome Robbins. You'd be forgiven for assuming that the street clothes are beneath ballet dancers. Far from it: along with 14 other dance companies from around the world, the Joffrey will perform at the Jazz Dance World Congress Aug. 3-6. Look for dancers donning sneakers, jazz shoes, even nothing at all on their feet, as 800 students and performers spend the days taking classes and their nights watching a choreography competition and performances by different companies. Masashi Action Machine from Japan will combine jazz with martial arts moves. Other groups will infuse their shows with elements from African tribal dance, hip-hop and tap. "This is really the Christmas for jazz dancers," says Lisa Arnett of Dance Spirit magazine. It's been the case virtually every August since 1990, when Chicago jazz dance legend Gus Giordano started the World Congress. Though the annual event has been held in places like Japan, Mexico, Germany and Costa Rica, its roots are in Chicago-the "nexus of concert jazz companies," says Arnett. Dancers from Russia, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Brazil, Mexico, Finland and Sweden will descend on the city, bringing their own moves and picking up a few new ones to take back to their parts of the world. "It is a cultural enrichment for my company," says choreographer Vittorio Biagi, who is bringing his Danza Prospettiva company from Rome. "I love the American audience."

Extractions: Back from Big Chill Eastnor 2005, and have to thank all the crowd that turned up to the Strongbow tent to watch myself, Jimpster and Palmskin do our thing back to back. It was kicking off big time! Noticed that Giles Peterson played my remix of D'Nell's 1st Magic Groove on last weeks show - which is nice. Not sure what's going to happen with this track but hopefully it will get a release at some point on BBE. Speaking of which myself and Dan from D'Nell are DJing at the Big Chill Bar (on Drays Walk just off Brick Lane) this saturday (the 13th) from 7pm to midnight. It's free entry. I've been putting the finishing touches on the next Shur-i-kan EP for Freerange, due out in November, and got a couple more remixes in the pipeline. Also following Tom Middleton's mixmag CD I've had lots of requests from people as to where they can get "I Want It" from. There is no release date yet, I'm hoping to sort out a Shur-i-kan / Emjay EP soon with it on.
