Olympic Preview: Cycling This Day in history Today s Birthday Word of the Day The olympic cyclingcompetition features three disciplinesMountain biking, road racing, http://www.infoplease.com/spot/ol-cycling.html
Extractions: Mountain biking debuted at the Games in Atlanta and differs from road and track in that the bikes used are heavier-duty, with larger, knobby tires, and race courses comprise undulating and sometimes very narrow dirt trails over periodic obstacles. In Athens the men will race somewhere between 40 and 50 kilometers and the women will go 30 to 40 km. The actual race distance isn't decided until the night before the race, when the event officials consider weather conditions. They aim for the men's race to last approximately two hours and 15 minutes and the women's race to last about two hours. Unlike road and track cycling, the mountain bike riders may receive no outside assistance during the race. They must make all repairs to their bikes themselves.
CYCLING of professionals means that the field will be the strongest in olympic history . Dunc Gray was Australia s firstever olympic cycling gold medallist. http://abc.net.au/olympics_1996/cycling.htm
Extractions: What A Record! The Olympic cycling program has undergone some big changes since Barcelona, with professionals eligible to compete for the first time and the introduction of mountain biking into the Olympic program. It is on the temporary velodrome at Stone Mountain Park that Australia is likely to dominate - if last year's World Championships in Colombia are an accurate barometer. Australia's men left there with three gold and two bronze medals. World champion, Darryn Hill, and Olympic veteran, Gary Neiwand, are on target to finish one-two in the sprint. But the reigning Olympic champion, Jens Fiedler, and the evergreen Canadian Curt Harnett, no doubt have other ideas.
1956 MELBOURNE OLYMPIC GAMES Dick Ploog also won a bronze in 1000m sprint cycling. The Melbourne Olympicsalso created history by virtue of the way they finished. http://abc.net.au/olympics_1996/game1956.htm
Extractions: The Olympics came to Australia for the first time in 1956. Against all odds Melbourne was host to the world's greatest sporting festival. The idea for the Olympics to come south was first mooted back in the 1920s, when James Pa' Taylor, only the second person from Australasia to be appointed to the International Olympic Committee, lobbied for Australia to be awarded the 1936 Olympics. His efforts were in vain, and the Games did not come down-under until 12 years after his death. There were many people involved in the efforts to persuade the IOC that Melbourne should have the 1956 Games, not the least Frank Beaurepaire, the great swimmer who won six medals in an Olympic career stretching from 1908 to 1924. He was Lord Mayor of Melbourne between 1940 and 1942 and worked long and hard to persuade, firstly, Australian business and government leaders and then, the Olympic chiefs that Melbourne deserved the honour. When his efforts succeeded he was again elected Lord Mayor so he could be the official host. Sadly, he died of a heart attack seven months before the Games opened. There were many problems before the Games actually took place. Because of Australia's stringent animal quarantine laws one of the sports, the equestrian events, were for the one and only time held in a different location - in this case, Stockholm in Sweden. There were arguments about where the main stadium should be, and for a while there was so much industrial unrest and lack of endeavour that it looked a real possibility that there would be another first - the relocation of the Olympics to another country.

The first bicycle was built in 1790 by a French aristocrat, Count Sivrac. It was made of wood and had no steering wheel or pedal. Forward motion was possible only by thrusting oneâs feet towards the ground, one after the other. In 1817, the German aristocrat Baron von Drais introduced the concept of turning the front wheel in different directions. In 1861 the motive power was invented by Pierre Michaux, and later perfected by an Englishman, J. K. Stanley. In 1887 an Irishman, John Boyd Dunlop, invented the inner tube, which was later refined by Edouard and Andre Michelin. The first bicycle race took place in 1868 in Paris. The first World Championship was held in 1895. The original two cycling disciplines â Road race and Track cycling â were included in the first Olympic Games of modern times in Athens in 1896. A Greek athlete, Aristides Konstantinidis, was crowned gold Olympic winner on March 31, 1896 for the 87km endurance road race, which started from Athens, went out to Marathon and ended at Faliro. At that first modern Olympic Games in 1896, the track events were held at the Faliro Velodrome â what is today known as the Karaiskaki Football Stadium.
