The first bicycle was built in 1790 by a French aristocrat, Count Sivrac. It was made of wood and had no steering wheel or pedal. Forward motion was possible only by thrusting oneâs feet towards the ground, one after the other. In 1817, the German aristocrat Baron von Drais introduced the concept of turning the front wheel in different directions. In 1861 the motive power was invented by Pierre Michaux, and later perfected by an Englishman, J. K. Stanley. In 1887 an Irishman, John Boyd Dunlop, invented the inner tube, which was later refined by Edouard and Andre Michelin. The first bicycle race took place in 1868 in Paris. The first World Championship was held in 1895. The original two cycling disciplines â Road race and Track cycling â were included in the first Olympic Games of modern times in Athens in 1896. A Greek athlete, Aristides Konstantinidis, was crowned gold Olympic winner on March 31, 1896 for the 87km endurance road race, which started from Athens, went out to Marathon and ended at Faliro. At that first modern Olympic Games in 1896, the track events were held at the Faliro Velodrome â what is today known as the Karaiskaki Football Stadium.

Over the years, events have come and gone, distances have been altered, from the one lap race last seen in 1908 to the 12-hour race which made its only appearance at those inaugural Games in Athens. In Sydney, three events will be added to the programme: the Madison, the Keirin and the Olympic sprint. One race that has stood the test of time is the 1,000m match sprint, though there is no result for 1908, when the race was declared void and officials refused to allow it to be rerun. Two of the British riders in the final, Bejamin Jones and Clarence Kingsbury, both suffered punctures and dropped out, while Marice Schilles, of France, and Victor Johnson, of Britain, raced for the line, the Frenchman just getting the edge. However, they were outside the time limit of 1min 45sec and Schilles remains one of the Olympic champions that never officially was. If there was an element of British fixing in that race in London, the fixing of the event in Berlin 1936 was somewhat more blatant: Toni Merkens, of Germany, it was agreed by judges, had deliberately swerved into the path of Arie van Vliet, of the Netherlands, and gone on to take the title. The Dutch protest was upheld but rather than disqualify Merkens and promote Van Vliet, officials fined Merkens DM100 (about £30 in today's money). Van Vliert was compensated with victory in the 1,000m time trial the next day. Merkens died soon after being wounded in action on the Russian front in the Second World War.

The Games reigned supreme in Ancient Greece for 12 centuries until in 393 AD Emperor Theodosius founded them to be a pagan celebration and thus ended the competition. It wasn't until the late 1800's that Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin began researching and rallying support for the rebirth of the Olympic Games. His hard work succeeded and in 1896 Athens was the host city of the first of the modern Olympic Games. Thirteen countries participated at the 1896 Athens Games with around 300 athletes taking part in the competition. There were 43 events contested which fell into the following categories;
