With large storage capacities, multimedia becomes increasingly elaborate and learning becomes a more enjoyable experience. As always, those who create games have led the way by showing us what multimedia can do. Even Microsoft tried to show what "information at your fingertips" could mean by persisting with MS Bookshelf, despite losing money on the project. Encyclopedia publishers also recognized the potential, but were frightened about how to make a living selling tiny CD-ROM discs after a century of printing collections of books that people loved to hold in their hands, books that parents could hand to their children. Even more seriously, teachers were intimidated by the challenge to add PCs to the classroom. After all, the PC could totally change how a class was run. Additionally, teachers faced a room full of students, many of whom were more computer- savvy than the teacher. It might have been students, parents and then school administrators who pushed computers into schools. However, there was a lot of support and encouragement from the businesses who demanded PC education: first to teach word processing, then to teach about computers and finally to use computers to teach. The role of the encyclopedia was central to the growing role of the multimedia PC.

Extractions: Motivation is a major concern to all teachers. English teachers want to motivate students to read and write. Communication teachers want to motivate students to speak and listen. All educators are eager to motivate students to learn technology. Technology itself can help the teacher in this task. This is a story of how a cyberquest has lead to all kinds of unanticipated and beneficial outcomes for various people all over the world and has created a perpetual 'motivation' machine which keeps regenerating and renewing itself. It all started for me back in the winter of 1998 when a television show called PREY, with an interesting twist on the theory of evolution, aired on abc. What if, due to environmental change and global warming, a new species of man evolved among us - and now, like Neandertal and Cromagnon of old, Homo Sapiens and this new species were competing for the same ecospace? Out of a desire to learn more about this show, I took to the internet. Eventually I found a fan-based message board set up and maintained by an artistic and technically able young woman inMassachusetts. The fans loved her message board, which was animplementation of Darryl Burgdorf's WEBBBS perl cgi script that can be downloaded at http://awsd.com/scripts/. With WEBBBS, users could receive email notifications of answers to their posts. They could search and configure the messages in the sequence they wanted to read them. They could see at a glance which messages were new.

Yet the customers within those physical library locations are increasingly able, and willing, to be self-reliant in their use of basic library services.

Extractions: by Chad Cain Greetings! My name is Chad Cain and I teach U.S. History and Government in Evansville, Indiana. I have been using the Twilight Zone in my classes for two years (the length of my teaching career) and I have found it to be very useful in several ways. I find that using Rod Serling's work in my classroom is very satisfying because of my students' reactions to the stories and the knowledge that his legacy is being furthered as another generation falls in love with The Twilight Zone. Many of the episodes also happen to be historically instructive, directly and indirectly. It goes without saying that these experiences have been positive and have led me to want to spread the word to other educators about the possibilities of using Rod's work in the classroom. First, I must address the concern of many teachers in today's world: state and federal standards. I would ease those concerns by simply stating that the kids in the classrooms of America today have been influenced by television more than any other generation. I find that most of my history students know more about World War II than any other topic in American history. Why? Because there is an entire genre of movies on the subject. These students also have the History Channel, which some of my colleagues have dubbed the World War II channel, because of its heavy emphasis on that topic.

Extractions: from CORE Volume 12, Number 1 (November 2002) T his TA Issue of CORE is a forum for Teaching Assistants (TAs) to explore and discuss issues that have become important to them during their stay at York. As TAs, we are called upon to perform a great variety of teaching tasks. Along the way, we encounter important ideas, issues, attitudes and situations that demand attention and reflection, as well as discussion. The TA Issue of CORE provides a unique opportunity to discuss and debate these topics in a timely way. This year's TA Issue, entitled Reality and the Borders of the Classroom , is no exception. The events of September 11 th One year later, four members of the York TA community share their thoughts on how September 11th in particular, and the "real world" in general, did or did not affect their teaching. Their contributions to this year's TA Issue of CORE reveal the lasting impact of September 11 th and other national and international events. Whether they have chosen to leave "reality" at the borders of the classroom, or to place it centre-stage, or to reject the very distinction between the "real world" and the "academic world," these four authors challenge us to reflect critically on the relationships between our disciplines, our students, our jobs and our selves, and the world(s) in which these relations are played out. They help us address the links between our teaching, whether in style or content, and our lives, as well as the ways in which we accept, reject or transform these links.

The Cost Of Energy: Teaching Others When you re talking to someone about energy, whether you re teaching them orthey re teaching something that sounds suspiciously like current events. http://www.grinzo.com/energy/teaching_others.html
Extractions: Home Project Overview Executive Summary Site Map ... Teaching Yourself Teaching Others The Basics Energy Sources Transportation Lighting ... Contact You probably shouldn't, unless you know a lot more about energy than do most people reading this site. But in terms of helping to raise energy awareness and encourage people to educate themselves, there's a lot you can do. As for why you should bother doing that, the answer is a simple, two-part equation: First, energy has always been critically important to industrialized countries; it's literally the oxygen of our economies, the irreplaceable component that makes possible almost everything we do and own. Second, with tighter supply and much higher prices looming for oil in the short run, and later for natural gas, it's more vital than ever that people understand energy issues so they can make more informed decisions. Those decisions will vary from one person to another, of course. Some will simply make more energy-aware purchasing decisions (which helps everyone), while others will take a more activist approach and write to policymakers and change how they vote (which also, not coincidentally, helps everyone). Extractions: Hello PZ Members, This has been a week of many blessings. We have seen Prophezine grow daily and have seen God's hand at work. We are starting to see the seeds that Tracye and I have been planting beginning to grow. It is our desire to see PZ become a means to help other ministries, evangelize and promote other ministries and become a clearing house for Bible Prophecy and World Events. I have been getting several emails as to why "you" have to now pay to access some of the Prophezine articles and areas. When I was called back to lead Prophezine, the Lord put a huge fire and zeal in my heart. It is not my intention to keep Prophezine status quo. The time is ripe. There are so many seeking answers to Bible Prophecy and World Events. Through Bible Prophecy and World Events we have another means that we can use to lead people to the Lord. I have been called back to PZ with a purpose and to grow this ministry bigger than ever and be more effective than ever. To do the things that the Lord has put in my heart to do with this ministry, it is going to take financial support. I are not doing this for my own personal gain, my heart is to serve the Lord and to spread the Gospel and the Hope of our Lords soon return.
