Is Your School Y2K OK? Making Your Computers Millennium Ready TeacherZone, a web site for teachers, has lesson plans, projects for kids, andmore to help your students understand computer history and current events. http://www.janinelim.com/jae/99octnov.htm
Extractions: Making Your Computers Millennium Ready October 99/November 99, Journal of Adventist Education , written by Janine Lim What will happen when the year 2000 rolls around? Some experts think the situation is not that series. "Chances are, few school districts will experience a computer meltdown this severe when classes resume on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000." Others predict doomsday scenarios such as the following for K-12 schools: "Administrative computer systems scramble student records. Heating and ventilation systems shut down. District-wide computer networks grind to a halt. Security doors won't open. Voice mail systems fall silent. Payroll and accounting systems print nonsense numbers and the staff doesn't get paid." Some computer programmers have become survivalists and are stockpiling food and other supplies. Marketers are taking advantage of the millennium madness and selling survival kits, generators, blankets, oil-burning lanterns, and more. How did this problem start? "When the first computer programmers went to work in the 1950s and '60s, they took a shortcut. Instead of entering all four numbers in a year, such as 1999, they used only the last two digits: 99. That way they could save valuable space in the computer's memory. Besides, in the 1950s, the year 2000 seemed a long way off! Computer experts figured that all the programs would be different by now. They were wrong. Many of the original computer programs from the 1950s and '60s are, in fact, still in use today. In addition, many newer programs simply followed the two-digit model for tracking years."

Connect the news to science, geography, social studies, art, math, languages arts, critical thinking, and technology! Also: Six on-line news quizzes for students of all ages. You probably use a newspaper in your classroom, at least occasionally, to teach current events. Newspapers connect your students to the real world and provide a better understanding of the world's events than almost any other news medium. Even newspapers, however, are limited in their ability to explain in detail the background of a story or to connect the real news with what students are learning during the rest of the school day. The sites featured this week can help you enhance and extend students' understanding of current events by linking them to other areas of the curriculum. Whether kids read about a tornado in Oklahoma, a war in Kosovo, or a corporate merger in Japan, one of the sites is sure to provide insights into the causes and effects of newsworthy events.
