We are a secular and informal group, run by volunteers with experience of such organizations. We do not direct people to any church or movement, and are motivated solely by fellow feeling for Scots folk who might be vulnerable to such groups. This isn't California, the folk are cannier and survivors of several centuries of religious strife. However, as in any society, there are people who are more vulnerable than others to cultic groups - especially the young, the recently bereaved, and the idealistic. Groups can exhibit cultic behavious to different degrees - even within the same group, there may be a liberal fringe around an inner circle of control. Obversely, there may be isolated wee congregations of bigger churches, perhaps with a charismatic minister, that would qualify if they became recognized as groups in their own right. Black and white judgements are difficult to make (unless you're in a cult, when they're very easy!) and discretion is needed. Since the American Revolution, this country has been shaken by periods of social protest followed by national religious revivals in which the entire population, regardless of religious affiliation, gave a heightened attention to religious concerns. During such periods, new and alternative religions have been born or given surges of growth while the more traditional churches reaped the bulk of the harvest. Such a national revival occurred in the early 1970s on the heels of the social protests of the 1960s. Observers first noticed the revival on the West Coast where evangelical Christians began work among the hippies and the multitude of street people. By 1970 the "Jesus people" revival was visibly shaking the hippie community from San Diego to Seattle. In California, the Children of God, the Christian Foundation (headed by Tony and Susan Alamo), the Jews for Jesus, the World Christian Liberation Front, and Jesus People International were organized. As the Jesus People revival gained momentum, other groups also sought an audience. Rev. Sun Myung Moon made his first visit to the United States in 1965 and took up permanent residence in 1972. Swami Bhaktivedanta founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness in New York in 1965. Yogi Bhajan brought the Sikh Dharma to Los Angeles in 1968. Kirpal Singh, a leader of one branch of the Sant Mat tradition, made the first of several visits in 1965. Maharaj Ji, the teenage guru, made his first visit in 1971, a prelude to his eventual movement to America in 1973. In the beginning, however, these movements were less important than the Jesus People groups.

As the project went on (and some more sceptical scholars opted out of it), similar results were sought through the participation of cult critics to conferences organized by CESNUR and INFORM, and by "cult apologists" to conferences organized by the AFF. Because of these results, the book is important and the bravery of its editors should be praised. Non-specialized readers should, of course, realize that whilst the book tries to give equal time to the two sides, this is not the prevailing situation in the academia, where critics of the anticult position still enjoy a comfortable majority in NRM studies (a fact both acknowledged and lamented by Zablocki and Beit-Hallahmi). Unfortunately, sloppy or non-specialized proofreading by the publisher does not match the quality of the papers: for instance, the Mormon city of Nauvoo is consistently misspelled "Nuavoo" throughout Jeff Kaplan’s otherwise very informative chapter.
