Cuba's territory, or the Cuban Archipelago, includes the Island of Youth (Isla de la Juventud) and several coastal islets and cays; it covers a land area of 110,861 km2.

Extractions: In partnership with the Eastern Cuba Cultural Exchange, Meridian is presenting an exhibition of work by artists from the Oriente (eastern) region of Cuba. Entitled Cuba Oriente: Contemporary Painting from Eastern Cuba , the exhibition includes 64 exceptionally rich and vibrant works from what is often described as the heartland of Cuban culture. At a distance of over 650 miles from Havana, the area is not well known by Americans in general, due to the complex relationship between Cuba and the United States. Cuba Oriente brings to light the stunning art of a colorful region. The ten participating artists span generations. Several of them are self-taught. Others include a former museum director, professors and graduates of the region's art academies. The works on display in Cuba Oriente vary in subject and style. Classical and modern styles intertwine and rich hues abound. Included are breathtaking landscapes, genre scenes, abstract works, surrealistic themes and richly imagined comments on life in Cuba. Oil, acrylic and woodcut are the primary mediums. Aligning with Meridian's dedication to promoting international understanding through the exchange of people, ideas and the arts, the objective of the Eastern Cuba Cultural Exchange is to foster an environment of good will through the sharing of art and culture. In describing the motive of his continued passion for his Cuban project, Mr. Hensley says "working through the arts and cultural exchange offers us a unique opportunity to establish non-judgmental communication between the citizens of our long-divided societies... and helps to bring about an atmosphere of mutual respect which can only help to pave the road to understanding and reconciliation."

Return to Previous Page Havana Santiago Guantánamo Matanzas - Havana Led by Ned Sublette - November 22-December 2,2001 This trip will be of special interest fo professional musicians, music historians, and musicologists, journalists, art critics, students and practictioners of Afro-Cuban folklore. Itinerary November 22 (day 1) Thursday November 23 (day 2) Friday (La Habana) Morning: Walking tour of La Habana Vieja. A distinguished Cuban architectural historian will give a guided tour of the old city and answer your questions about its history. Afternoon: Visit to Fundación Yoruba in Centro Habana - a newly opened museum created by an independent association of babalaos (scholar-diviners of the Yoruba religion popularly known as santería) which displays the personalities and attributes of the orishas (deities of the religion). Evening: A visit to the Wemilere African Roots Festival in Guanabacoa, a barrio of Havana known for its intense Afro-Cuban culture. November 24 (day 3) Saturday (La Habana) Morning: Free time Afternoon: Rumba and orisha performance with Yoruba Andabo. This excellent Havana-based rumba group plays and dances both rumba (the percussive Cuban street music) and music of the Yoruba religion using batá drums. In the latter segment the dancers impersonate the orishas in full costume. Dinner: at a paladar, or private restaurant. Evening: Timba research wherever the best dance band is playing. Timba is an old word for "rumba" that in the mid-90s came to be applied to the contemporary hard-edged black dance music of Havana. It could be Los Van Van, NG La Banda, Paulito FG, Issac Delgado, Adalberto Álvarez, Charanga Habanera, Bamboleo, Manolito y Su Trabuco - or someone else . . . we'll keep you posted . . .
