I was first diagnosed with Crohn's Disease nearly ten years ago and, being a teenager at the time, I found it difficult to talk to others about the disease that did not have it. I created this site as a place to share stories and information - for teens, by teens - with Crohn's Disease, Colitis, or IBS. Apparently I've made a big impact here. I'm glad to do what I can to make a difference. On this page, I will post experiences we teens have had with the disease. Any advice you may wish to pass on to others is also welcome. Since most all of us follow special diets, there is a recipe section. I have tried many of the recipes listed here, and several have become my favorites. Try them and let me know what you think. I was 13 at the time and had spent the summer in severe pain. My intestines had swollen shut and I was totally dehydrated when I went into the hospital. Before I was diagnosed, the doctors gave me Zantac for an "ulcer", and one doctor thought that I was starving myself! I would sleep a lot more than usual and I didn't want to do anything. The worst part was that nobody knew what was wrong with me. Did I have some new, unheard of disease? Not even TV would leave me alone; I'd click around the cable and be greeted with: "How can I be dying of a disease no one's ever heard of?" from a soap opera. How depressing! When I was diagnosed, I had the usual selection of tests done, like the oh so fun Upper GI! To this day barium makes me gag. What was worse was the next day the doctor started me on vanilla Ensure, which is just too much like barium. Days later, I was released from the hospital with a disease I'd never heard of in my life and a lactose-free diet. I was to take six Asacol per day.

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the general name for diseases that cause inflammation in the intestines. Crohn's disease can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and to another type of IBD called ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and ulcers in the top layer of the lining of the large intestine. Crohn's disease affects men and women equally and seems to run in some families. In 1999, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released the latest figures on the incidence of US foodborne illness considered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be the most complete estimate ever compiled. Seventy-six million Americans every year get food poisoning, more than double the previous estimate. In today's food safety lottery there's a 1 in 4 chance you'll get sick, 1 in 840 chance you'll be hospitalized and 1 in 55,000 chance that an American will die from foodborne illness annually. The CDC estimates 97% of foodborne illness is caused by animal foods. The latest US Department of Agriculture (USDA) survey, for example, found 9 out of 10 Thanksgiving turkeysover 90%are contaminated with campylobacter, the most common cause of bacterial food poisoning in the US. And 75% of the turkeys are contaminated with two or more food-borne diseases, most often salmonella as well, which are becoming dangerously resistant to many of our best antibiotics. Although thousands die from food poisoning every year in the United States, most sufferers only experience acute self-limited episodes. Up to 15% of those that contract salmonella, however, go on to get serious joint inflammation that can last for years. An estimated 100,000 to 200,000 people suffer from arthritis arising directly from foodborne infections each year it the USA.

Extractions: Crohn's disease is usually characterised by inflammation of one or more areas of the digestive tract, with normal areas of gut in between. It can occur anywhere from the mouth to the anus but most commonly in the small and large intestine. This inflammation may lead to ulceration, abscesses and strictures in the bowel. It is a chronic (long lasting) condition which can wax and wane over a period of months and years. So far there is no cure but treatment can produce a symptom-free remission. Oral Crohn's affecting the mouth and lips, occurs quite frequently in children and may occur with or without any involvement of the digestive tract. With Crohn's disease the symptoms are extremely variable and can include severe abdominal pain (sometimes mistaken for appendicitis), vomiting, nausea, persistent diarrhoea (possibly with blood and/or mucus), constipation, dramatic weight loss, tiredness, anaemia and mouth ulceration. Sometimes the symptoms may not initially suggest bowel disease at all, with the child or young adult feeling very lethargic with a loss of appetite, joint pains, skin rash or even a failure to grow or develop pubertally.
