Extractions: Criminal Profiling What is Criminal Profiling? Criminal profiling consists of analyzing a crime scene and using the information to determine the identity of the perpetrator. While this doesn't directly give you the perpetrator's name, it is very helpful in narrowing down suspects. For example, a profile based on a crime scene provides information that may include the perpetrator's personality , sex, age, ethnic background, and possible physical features such as disfigurements or height and weight. This information can then be used to identify possible suspects, depending on who fits the profile. Personality is one of the most important parts of a criminal profile. A Forensic Science website puts it precisely: "Behavior reflects personality. And that is what profiling is all about" ( ForPsych, 1997 How Does Criminal Profiling Work? Personality profiles of criminals are based on the way in which a crime is committed, also known as the 'method of operations' or m.o. The m.o. includes the identity of the victim(s), what the victims (in the case of a serial offender) have in common, the weapon(s) used, the degree of hostility, the existence (or lack) of any torture and/or sexual molestation, and so on. While the applied forensic experience and supervision are somewhat different for these two sets of fellows, they participate in one didactic program which includes clinical and legal components. The Program's objectives are consistent with recent trends in graduate training in psychology, which encourage a general pre-doctoral internship followed by a post-doctoral year of training in a specialty. In many states, these two years satisfy the experience requirements for licensing as a psychologist. The Program is also designed to provide the necessary supervised experience for certification as "designated forensic psychologist," which is required by state regulations for public sector forensic mental health positions in Massachusetts. "Forensic psychology" refers to the application of clinical psychology in service to the legal system, to individuals about whom the legal system must make decisions, and to other clinical populations for whom clinical decisions may be of legal importance. These populations include, for example, adults with mental illnesses in criminal and civil cases, disturbed and delinquent juveniles, and children and families who come before the courts on questions of child welfare.
