Extractions: I was excited to try out CalcuLadder because I had been hearing many homeschooling family sing it's praises. When I received the program I feared that my kids would balk at doing the same timed workbook page day after day. Was I surprised at how much they enjoyed the challenge of trying to beat their time from the day before. This program takes only 5 minutes a day to complete and has an easy self grading format that allows older children to grade their own work. This program allows the parent to see quickly and easily were the child is making continual mistakes. This easy, affordable and successful program is showing great results in our children. Buy yourself a stop watch and be prepared to see great results in your child's calculation scores.

Extractions: Students will learn through first-hand experience about life on the Colorado Plains by spending an afternoon and night at the Plains conservation Center Field School. They will develop an understanding of what Colorado Plains are, and what it was like for Native Americans, explorers, miners, and cowboys to live there. Long experience with a cross-curricular approach is one of the reasons that students at Franklin Elementary are successful in math. Literature helps their students make mathematical connections and extend their learning. Materials from Whats Smaller Than a Pygmy Shrew will complement their newly adopted Everyday Mathematics series (K-6) and use literature to excite and engage their students as they discover and explore many facets of mathematics. Listening Centers for Guided Reading This grant will purchase two listening centers and three sets of books/cassettes to be used with the curriculum. The goal is to provide these listening centers to all third grade students. Students can use the centers to participate in Book Talks where the teacher selects books for the students to discuss. Students who would not be able to read the books at a given level can still participate in the discussion by being able to listen to the books on tape. Students can also use the centers to improve and reinforce reading skills by listening to a book before or after reading it independently to improve comprehension. Another objective of this grant will be to involve parents and community members in the learning process by having them crate tapes for the listening library.
