Extractions: Austin Readers for School Libraries, Austin, TX The mission of the Austin Readers for School Libraries is to "encourage and facilitate children's reading, to instill a passion for books, and to promote libraries as strong, vital institutions that are central to the well being of their schools and community." In 1995, the Board of the Austin ISD threatened to cut library positions in several of the city's smaller elementary schools. One parent, Virginia Raymond, made an impassioned plea before the Austin Independent School District Board to retain the staff. A school library supporter on the board was so impressed with Ms. Raymond that he suggested she reach out to other parents who shared her belief in the importance of quality library service in the schools. Thus the Austin Readers for School Libraries were born. Georgia O'Keeffe Elementary School Friends of the Library

Extractions: General Overview Fifth Grade Sixth Grade Flexible Schedule ... Recommendations GENERAL OVERVIEW While the TMS Library/Media Center continues to be at the core of fulfilling the academic goals of the school, our program was severely impacted by the loss of the half time professional position. Six classes of fifth and sixth graders a day virtually eliminated any time available for instruction of upper level students or collaboration with their teachers. The sheer overwhelming number of students contributed to the reevaluation and eventual elimination of the fifth grade research project. Our initiative, begun last year to increase communication with and the awareness of the faculty of library resources, also had to be curtailed. A successful Library Media program includes many components, the combination of which is unique in that it impacts so many different facets of a school. The Library Media program provides formal instruction, curricular support by the provision of materials, collaborative curricular support through consultation with teachers, curriculum development, informal instruction and individual mentoring, instruction of and communication with faculty, research support both at school and home, as well as the fostering of a lifelong love of reading. Underlying all of this is, of course, the very basic function of maintaining and circulating the library collection. Given the current staffing level, successful fulfillment of all these responsibilities is, unfortunately, unattainable.

Route 12 Advisory Committee The Committee also worked with The University of connecticut school of Agriculture 2001 at the Ledyard Middle school media Center and is open to all. http://www.town.ledyard.ct.us/frmain15.htm
Extractions: Route 12 Advisory Committee Summary Last May the Town Council chartered a committee to look at development along Route12 and possible reuse of the Gales Ferry School site once the new grammar school is completed. Membership for this committee was largely derived from the Zoning, Planning and Economic Development Commissions. Members of the Advisory Route 12 Tri-Committee are: Pete Bargmann (Zoning), Pete Champagne (EDC), Cindy Fortner (Community Representative), Ken Koe (Planning), Linnie Lawrence (Planning), Jim Mandeville (Zoning), Quentin Long (Community Representative), Komal Shahista Shaikh (Director of Planning). The Committee also worked with The University of Connecticut School of Agriculture Professor John Alexopolus on this project and conducted a public workshop last September. Another workshop is planned for 7:00 P.M. on March 20, 2001 at the Ledyard Middle School Media Center and is open to all. The Route 12 Advisory Committee meets regularly at 6:30 P.M.. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month in the Lower Level Conference Room at Town Hall. The Committee has observed that Route 12 is relatively undeveloped and offers excellent opportunities for development that can be a benefit to the Town. Retail and commercial sprawl, characteristic of 1960s and 1970s development in other towns and cities, has been and can be avoided in Ledyard. Route 12 development already consists of several commercially developed areas that include the areas near the intersection with Long Cove Road, east of the intersection of Barry Drive, at the intersection with Christy Hill Road, along Route 12 in Gales Ferry Village, and at Dow Chemical.

Extractions: Instructional Challenges Which is why Elizabeth Feser, the schools chief here, jumped at the chance to have a group of 11 superintendents from across Connecticut come visit the Windsor district recently and offer a candid assessment of her work to improve teaching and learning. Participants say the brainstorming that takes place is extremely rare among superintendents. The talk is frank, and revolves around the immediate challenges they face. The focus is the link between district-level leadership and what happens in the classroom. Many of those involved say it has changed how they go about leading their systems. Trained Observers Harvard professor Richard F. Elmore leads a discussion.
