Extractions: Adult Education: Literacy and Self-Advocacy Skills New Hampshire: Since 1998, The Right Question Project has worked with the New Hampshire Bureau of Adult Education to integrate our educational strategy into their Adult Literacy programs. More than 60 educators are using the RQP method to help their students build skills to advocate for themselves and navigate systems. An adult educator shared this story about the impact of RQP on one of her students: Nashua, NH: The Nashua Adult Learning Center (ALC) has been particularly successful in using RQP in their Family Empowerment Project. The ALC has shared our method for teaching advocacy skills with staff members, who have then shared it with colleagues and participating families. Many of the families are now interacting more effectively with the programs and services that directly affect them. For example: Family Empowerment Project participants had questions about how the Division for Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) was conducting their assessments and asked the local DCYF supervisor to meet with them to answer their questions.

More and more, the literate citizen is expected to use technology to access, analyze and communicate information by knowing how to manage electronic information from an ever-widening array of resources and in a wide variety of formats. One must be proficient in using a variety of technology tools to solve problems, make informed decisions, and generate new knowledge. And the development of these skills is the responsibility of the schools and their instructional staff. Yet many of our educators lack the necessary skills themselves to be comfortable in playing a leadership role in the integration of technology into Connecticuts classrooms. In fact, the role of the classroom teacher needs to change significantly as technology is used in a more widespread manner in instruction. The following chart highlights these changing responsibilities and opportunities.

Under the guidelines, the amount of total support is calculated and then each parent's portion of the total support is calculated pro rata according to their respective incomes. The Guidelines provide that judges have the discretion to deviate from the guideline amounts in certain specified situations. For instance, the Court may take into consideration a) the educational needs of the parents; b) the needs of other children supported by the non-custodial parent; c) extraordinary visitation expenses; and d) whether a deviation should be allowed due to shared or split custody situations. The Guidelines provide that the parents shall also share unreimbursed medical expenses and work-related day care costs. These expenses are shared pro rata according to income after adding in the child support paid to the receiving parent.
