Extractions: Help Terry By Cynthia Tornquist/CNN ITHACA, New York (AllPolitics, August 2) Once upon a time, Randall Terry and his Operation Rescue followers confronted pregnant women and doctors outside clinics where abortions are performed. In 1992, he even encouraged abortion foes to thrust an aborted fetus in then-Gov. Bill Clinton's face. But today, Terry is running for Congress. And while his views on abortion haven't changed, he has forsaken street protests for politics. "The challenge for me has been to show people that I can speak articulately about economic issues, about foreign policy issues," says Terry, 39. "People can't imagine I love sports and I'm a dad and have fun with my family. It's almost like I'm this one-dimensional 'aaugh.'" Terry, a Republican, is running in southern New York's 26th District, which meanders from Ithaca south to the Pennsylvania border and then east to Kingston. The seat is now held by three-term Democratic Rep. Maurice Hinchey, who is seeking re-election. Terry also has a rival for the Republican nomination, Bud Walker, a fourth-generation apple grower.

It is bicameral , comprising the House of Representatives and the Senate . The House of Representatives consists of 435 members, each of whom represents a congressional district and serves for a two-year term. House seats are apportioned among the states by population ; in contrast, each state has two Senators, regardless of population. There are a total of 100 senators, who serve six-year terms. Both representatives and senators are directly elected by the people, but in some states the governor may appoint a temporary replacement when a Senate seat is vacant. A statement from the Office of Management and Budget said the funds would "make up for shortfalls in routine government operations." The funds would go to the departments of Agriculture, Defense, Energy, HHS, HUD and Transportation, Interior, Treasury and Veterans Affairs. NASA and other international assistance programs would also receive a portion of the funds. The president asked Congress to pass the funding by the July 4 holiday. According to the White House, the request fits within the discretionary spending caps established last year by Congress. Office of Management and Budget Director Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr., said, "We believe that this request covers all the outstanding funding needs of the government for this fiscal year, and we will recommend that the president not sign a bill that provides more discretionary spending than the spending caps allow."

Sharen Neuhardt, a well-known corporate attorney and friend of mine, is very close to entering the race against Rep. Dave Hobson. Sharen asked me to post at OurCongress to start getting the word out that formidable Democratic candidates are lining up across the country to take out the corrupt, do-nothing GOP incumbents. Sharen lives in Yellow Springs with her husband, Dave (also a partner at Thompson Hine), and her two children. The family owns Whitehall Farm House, a Yellow Springs landmark. Sharen served on the Board of Trustees of Planned Parenthood of the Miami Valley from the early 1990's until 2002, and she remains very active in the Greene County community, especially with the Tecumseh Land Trust. Sharen represents Democrats' best hope of taking back this district, given her straight-talking style and enormous fundraising capacity. With her extremely high opportunity costs of entering the race, 7th District Democrats should be heartened that Sharen views this as a winnable race. She has met with Greene County Democratic Party Chair Mike Gardner and is making calls to other local party chairs before declaring her candidacy. Her interest is a wonderful omen for candidate recruitment in Ohio and across the country. This is a race to watch. Sharen's fiery style is reminiscent of Paul Hackett, and she will attract similarly praiseworthy attention from mainstream media and the blogosphere. If you have any further questions about Sharen, you can consult her biography at

Extractions: Help By Ann Curley/CNN WASHINGTON (Feb. 4) Following the Senate's example, the House passed a measure Wednesday afternoon to rename Washington's National Airport after former President Ronald Reagan. The final vote was 240-186. Representatives from Virginia, where the airport is located, argued against Congress intruding on local affairs and choosing a name that local residents might oppose. Air traffic controllers, recalling Reagan's firing of 11,000 controllers during a 1981 strike, also opposed the new name. But Republican supporters won in the end, hoping that the bill can be signed into law before Friday, which marks Reagan's 87th birthday. Earlier in the day, White House Press Secretary Mike McCurry said President Bill Clinton would sign the bill if it was passed by Congress. House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-Texas) called Reagan one of the most loved Americans.
