The defects are suspected causes of muscle stiffness in Labrador retrievers, epilepsy in Jack Russell terriers, abnormal muscle contractions in cats and head tremors in English bulldogs. The investigators hope to identify the genetic mutations responsible for these diseases and develop DNA-based blood tests for use in breeding programs. This is a pilot study that will first examine myotonia congenita, a muscle disease in cats that causes abnormal muscle contractions.
