Extractions: COMORO ISLANDS Les Comores Located in a strategic position at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel, the Comoro Islands once played a major role in a thriving world economy of the western Indian Ocean . The archipelago arose from the seabed of the western Indian Ocean as the result of volcanic activity. The four major islands: Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Mwali (Moheli), Nzwani (Anjouan), and Maore (Mayotte), are of varying age with distinct topograhical characteristics. Mayotte, the oldest of the islands, is closest to Madagascar and is highly eroded with slow, meandering streams. Ngazidja, the youngest of the islands is closest to Africa and has a massive, volcano . Seismic activity continues today on this island and experts have been concerned that a very violent eruption may occur in the near future. Beaches served as landing areas for traditional sailing vessels and martime trade is mentioned in ancient documents. Domoni, located on the eastern shore of the island of Nzwani(Anjouan), for example, with several beaches nearby was a major trading center in the fifteenth century. Ships traveled to Africa and Asia with archaeological materials providing evidence that trade existed between the community and places as far away as Japan. Since the end of the fifteenth century, many European and American sailors visited the islands. These included whalers, merchants, and pirates, such as the infamous

Extractions: The Comoro Islands are an archipelago of four islands and several islets located in the western Indian Ocean about ten to twelve degrees south of the Equator and less than 200 miles off the East African coast. They lie approximately halfway between the island of Madagascar and northern Mozambique at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel. The archipelago is the result of volcanic action along a fissure in the seabed running west-northwest to east-southeast. The total area of the four islands is 785 square miles (2,034 square kilometers). The four major islands are Ngazidja, Mwali, Nzwani, and Mayotte (Maore). Ngazidja is the largest and the youngest island in the archipelago. It is the most westerly of the islands, lying 188 miles from Mozambique. Ngazidja has an active volcano that rises to a height of 7,746 feet (2,361 meters) above sea level. Mwali, 28 miles south-southeast of Ngazidja, is the smallest of the islands with a central mountain range that rises 2,556 feet (790 meters) above sea level. Nzwani lies about twenty-five miles easterly of Mwali, has a central peak that rises 5,072 feet (1,575 meters) above sea level. It also has several swift running streams that cascade down to long, sandy beaches. Forty-four miles to the southeast of Nzwani is Mayotte (Maore), the oldest of the islands. It is almost surrounded by a barrier reef and is fairly flat with slow meandering streams and mangrove swamps. Click on the following for more details about the four islands:

Extractions: Abstract: Since its independence, the Comoros Federation has been faced with a profound crisis that affects its political institutions. Today, even its territorial integrity is questioned. In 1997, two of the three islands decided to secede, breaking the young federation into pieces. This article attempts to demonstrate that the disintegration of the Comorian federation can better be understood by taking into account the strong forces that have characterised the twenty-five years of its short history. These forces are the archipelago's natural tendency towards political breakdown, the specific interests of France, and the authoritarian and centralising policy of the federal government in Moroni. This article attempts to show the chaotic and incredible history of this volcanic archipelago, punctuated by numerous and theatrical developments. This paper also aims to expand the study on this Indian Ocean archipelago, which has so far been neglected. In the first part, which covers the period from independence to the advent of the federation, the author gives a general idea of 1) the pre-colonial and colonial history of the Comorian archipelago, 2) the walk towards independence, and 3) the Mayotte island's dissent. He also analyses 4) the rejection of the federation option in 1978, 5) the ambiguous French policy, 6) the circumstances surrounding the declaration of independence and 7) the advent of an independent Comorian entity without the Mahorian island.

Extractions: East Africa can be divided geographically into three subregions. The first, the Great Lakes Region, includes Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi. The second, the Horn of Africa, includes Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Djibouti, and Somalia. And the last subregion is the Indian Ocean islands of Comoros and Seychelles. These distinctions are made based on different types of vegetation, availability of water, and topography in the three regions. We will look at each of these one by one. Take a look at the map below on vegetation in East Africa. Notice the immense diversity that exists both within and between countries! On the chart below the map, list the types of vegetation that exist for each country listed. Seychelles and Comoros have been excluded because they are not shown on the map; we will discuss them separately later. In general, what kinds of similarities and differences of vegetation did you notice between the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes Region? You may have observed that the Horn of Africa has more desert and semidesert regions and the Great Lakes Region has more forests. Both subregions have some mountains, savanna land, and steppe. The following pictures will also give you some idea of the diversity of vegetation that exists throughout East Africa.
